Where is Carnholme?
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 18:42 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to decipher faint writing on a Sheffield marriage cert from 1862 between Horace John Knowles and Sarah Stevenson, both residing at Carnholme/Camholme...... Help! Does anyone have an idea of where this might be?
Thanks

Hi Di,

I have to say this has me beat .. have another look at the certificate and see if it might say Cornholme which used to be in West Yorkshire, but is near Todmorden in Lancashire .. ?

Thanks Pels. It's so faint that it may be Cornholme. But both came from Sheffield/Eckington/Chesterfield/Derby way so that seems an incredibly distant place (relatively speaking!!) Looking at it again (and again..) it could be C..... lane. Wish the vicar wrote more clearly.

Is there any chance you could post a small section of the certificate on here Di .. by doing that we might be able to help you read it .. ?

Have to say I've tried to find this couple on FreeBMD and so far haven't had any luck .. ?

Added .. although I did find a Horace J married to Jane, living in Eckington in 1871 ??

Just a thought in the meantime, if you click on the link below, at the top of the page you will see Nearby Places .. you can alter the distance to find places within X amount of miles of Sheffield, to see if any of them look similar ??

Hello again Di,

I really do apologise for not getting back to this sooner .. I've downloaded
the copy and still can't make out what it says .. ?

My guess is the last four letters could be lane ??

I'm wondering whether it might be worth our while to post it somewhere
else and let a wider group of people have a look .. ?

Look at the letter that we think is H.
I think it may be P looking at the word bookeeper.
Could it be Campolane?

Thank you so much. Pity I'm back to work tomorrow - following this up would be much more interesting than trying to inspire (?) Year 10.....!
