*COMPLETED* SNADDON, Robert and Joseph 1800 - 1900
« on: Friday 01 May 09 02:44 UTC (UK) »

Hey,
   I am a complete newbie at this, I've been doing the family history thing for a grand total of 2 day (whoo hoo!!!).
   So far, I've managed about 5 generations on my Dad's side, but I can't find any record of birth or death for either Robert or Joseph.
What I do have:
Robert SNADDON married Janet Gentles Bernard in Tillicoultry, Clackmannan on 31 July 1891

Robert's parents were Joseph SNADDON (deceased) and Janet Cook. They were married at Carnock, Fife, Scotland on 19 Dec 1853.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks  Smiley

Hi Heather

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

You're doing well for two days in! From IGI at www.familysearch.org this looks a likely entry for Robert's birth:

ROBERT COOK SNADON   Birth: 27 OCT 1866 in Clackmannan, Clackmannan

You are probably not picking it up on Scotlands People because of the spelling variation on the surname (one D). There are 10 children showing to Joseph and Janet on IGI between 1855 - 1873. Would probably be worthwhile searching SP with wild cards for the surname SN?D*N, sometimes the surname will be Snad(d)o(e)n.

An old post by someone also researching the same family through daughter Charlotte (b. 26 JUN 1873 in Tillicoultry):

Might be worth contacting her (if her email is still active) to compare notes.

Hello

So Monica is on the case...  I'll keep out of it.  Info for later

Janet Gentles Bernard was born on 14 July 1872 Tillicoutry, Clackmannan.  Father:  William Bernard   Mother:  Christina Pow  (source IGI - at www.familysearch.org  an 'extracted' record).

Shall post how to search for all children born to a couple on the IGI - useful for birth pre 1875.  Apologies if you're aware of ths.
~~~~~~~~--------------------
To use the IGI to search for all children born to the same parents go to:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
1.  Enter father and mothers names in the 2 right hand boxes (sometimes best to have mothers first name only)
2.  'Event' select 'birth/christening'
3.  'Year' - select - type 'marriage year date if known '
4.  'Year range' -  enter - '+ or - 20 years'
5.  'Region' enter 'British Isles'
6.  Country - enter 'Scotland'
7.  County - enter - 'Clackmannanshire', (assumes this is the county you’re searching in - or leave all counties)
*   Press enter and hopefully up will come a list   :O)
A site which comprehensively explains about batch numbers etc is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#PageTitle
Give it a try - it's good for dates up to 1875.  Always double check that the batch no. is the same for all of the children.  Before 1855 you'll sometimes come up with only the father on an OPR - after 1855 you should have both parents always.  There are also anomalies in that sometimes only children of one gender will show.....
Good luck.
Thanks Monica and Piglet! That is a huge help.
Monica, from the info that you have attached it looks to be the same family. You can access census records on ancestry.com right? I'm a little confused though, how did they end up with a different last name on the cenus/birth record compared to the wedding certificate? Robert's wedding certificate has it listed as SNADDON. I can understand it getting messed up over a few generations, but having different records that are spelt differently for the same person seems kinda strange... That and I'm pretty sure that I've found a census record for Robert after his marriage (1901 - haven't been able to get access to it yet though), and that has his last name listed as SNADDON as well. Is that kind of inconsistency for the records of an individual common?
Piglet, thanks heaps!!! I'd been trying to work out how on earth to track down siblings outside of census records and that tip is a big help!
Sorry to be a pain, another qu Smiley
I ran joseph and janet through the IGI thingie that piglet suggested, it only came up with jane, james and robert (from Monica's census list); also came up with charlotte and frances but the batch number is different for these two. Does that mean that they come from a different snaddon family? Piglet, from the description that you gave I'm assuming that a common batch number is used for members of the same family...?
HI Heather
Regarding the issue of spelling variations, it was very much a sign of the times  Smiley Spellings were much more fluid in those days and not rigid as they are today. Researching in this period, you have to make use of wildcards where possible to pick up on different spellings of any one surname. As it is, the Snaddon name as you have seen for the family is not too different (one d instead of two; an E at the end instead of an O).
You can see different spellings of a surname on every document that you see!
Regarding the different batch nos. showing on IGI. Batch nos. on IGI are unique to one specific parish. Children showing to Joseph and Janet post the start of official registration 1855 - 1873 look to have been born in 5 different parishes, each one with its own batch no. on IGI.
The list of children showing:
1. ISABELLA SNADDON  Birth: 27 JAN 1855 Carnock, Fife
2. JANET SNADDEN Birth: 03 JAN 1857 Airth, Stirling
3. BARBARAH SNADDEN  Birth: 03 OCT 1858 Airth, Stirling
4. ISABELLA SNEDDON Birth: 13 JAN 1861 Falkirk, Stirling
5. JANE SNADON Birth: 01 DEC 1862 Clackmannan, Clackmannan
6. JAMES SNADON Birth: 25 NOV 1864 Clackmannan, Clackmannan
7. ROBERT COOK SNADON Birth: 27 OCT 1866 Clackmannan, Clackmannan
8. DAVIDA SNADDONBirth: 07 FEB 1869 Falkirk, Stirling
9. FRANCES MICHIE SNADDONBirth: 22 APR 1871 Tillicoultry, Clackmannan
10. CHARLOTTE SNADDON Birth: 26 JUN 1873 Tillicoultry, Clackmannan
May as well throw my hat in the ring onthis one as I think they are all inter-related  Huh
Charlotte Marshall 1802 Sauchie married Robert Snaddon at Sauchie in 1827..have not been able to trace him, but she had two illegitimate children by James Cook
1. Charlotte 1826
2. John Cook 1836.
Their grandmother was Ann Michie 1771.
Have just spent the WHOLE morning trying to sort out this lot, in other words they are driving me crazy.
Have posted before on this issue, but cannot remember when  Huh old age is fast catching up !!!
It is early afternoon here but think I deserve a drink  Grin
Added to the above -
Have not been able to find a death for Robert Snaddon, he and Charlotte Marshall have a daughter Robina in 1831, then Robert must have died, as in 1836 Charlotte has James Cook..
Oh I don't know am totally confused, talk about a "tangled web we weave"
Somehow or ever I think they were related somewhere along the line..wish I could find a death or something for Robert Sneddon/Snadon etc etc or whatever.
Am I frustrated...YES.
