Have you thought about contacting the convent in Much Birch?  They might have some recollection.  Address is The Poor Clare Monastery

no, but I think you will find that The Poor Clare's are a silent order, so surely the would not have run a school. I could try writing and see what comes back. Thanks for the suggestion.

mmmmmmm - a silent school.  Sounds like bliss!!

According to the catholic encyclopedia http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=8426, in 1910 (within Newport diocese) these orders were represented: Poor Clares, Our Lady of Charity, the Good Shepherd, Sisters of Nazareth, Ursulines of Chavagnes, St. Joseph of Annecy, St. Vincent de Paul.  The sisters of charity of St Vincent de Paul ran a boarding school for girls at Bullingham.

Sorry I can't be more help.  Good luck with your hunt.

thanks spidermonkey.

lol trained as a Maths Teacher.

I know The Poor Clare's were silent because as a teenager I was a member of the red cross. I did voluntary work at Hereford County and we had a nun from The Poor Clare's addmitted and she had to have permission from the mother superior,  who wa present at all times, to speak to a doctor.

There's a list of schools in the directories here

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp

No sign of a St Winifred of even a Winifred running a school, however.

I can find various st Winifred's around the country - is it possible that she boarded away from Hereford?

I see you asked the same question on another forum about a year ago, without any joy.  Have you spoken to Hereford Record Office?  Is there anyone still alive who could give you more information?  Are you getting the name and location from family stories or is it written anywhere?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink
