Hodges, Croydon early C20
« on: Friday 01 May 09 15:49 BST (UK) »

In 1901 I have Frank Hodges 27, gas engine maker b Forest Hill m to Alice Louisa 26 b Horsham (she was a Mitchell) living at 14 Mitcham Rd Croydon. In 1911 he was at the same address with son Charles Frederick Frank age 5 and Sister in Law and two nieces but no sign of Alice Louisa although he still claims to be married. I can't find a death for her in the intervening years and can't find her anywhere on census either. Any ideas?
There is a possible death March Quarter 1920 in Croydon of Alice S Hodges but where was she in 1911? Following up wild guesses in 1911 is rather expensive

Hi Painterlady,

Try Alice Louisa Hodger, maybe? (In an institution in Croydon district)

Hi

1911 census

Alice Louisa Hodger, 36 , patient in Croydon Union Infirmary, Mayday Road, Croydon.  ( This is now Mayday University Hospital. ) That probably explains why her sister was in the household - looking after the children.

Many thanks to Tati and Groom, why didn't I think of that spelling? one just goes blank at times,  you are probably right that sister in law was standing in for her. Wonder what the problem was, there was diabetes in the family and she had a sister died at 26. So the death I found is probably right but not necessarily for the same reason, there was a year between. So much one would love to know but never will, especially when there is no one older to ask.

No need to think of alternate spellings, really - a search for Alice Louisa (surname blank) born Horsham ca. 1875 finds her quite easily  Cheesy

Don't know if you've seen it already but there's quite a bit about the Infirmary in this topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,186473.0.html

Thanks Mark and Tati, I did find her as you said under her Christian names and tried that on another tricky one but her names were too common and I was swamped by possibilities That was a fascinating series of posts on the Hospital/workhouse,will go back and reread it more thoroughly when I have time.
