Hep finding the father of Sarah Powell (1851) of Tayllyn
« on: Friday 01 May 09 23:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi can anyone help please I am looking for the baptism record for Sarah Powell she was born 15th February 1851 Gwndwn-wall Llanfihangel Tayllyn father John mother Margaret.

At least I think her father was John, she states her father is John Powell on her marriage certifciate but her birth certifcate does not show any father at all and her mother is listed as Margaret Powell without any former name.   So Sarah was either illegitimate of this was one of those areas where the registrar at the time interpreted the rules to mean that fathers did not need to be recorded!  I was hoping a baptism record might shed some light!

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Not sure if this helps, but on the 1851 census, Brecon Workhouse there is a Margaret Powell age 24, servant and what appears to be a 2 month old daughter Sarah, both born Brecknockshire. The 1851 census was taken 30 March 1851 so Sarah would have been 2 month old then.

Good luck with your search

Thanks,   I guess that could be them I certainly have not found them any where else, but then I have not had an opportunity to look at the 1851 census for the place where she was born (as given on her birth certificate).

I think the birthplace should read Gwndwnwall, Llanfihangel Talyllyn [or Tallyllyn on IGI] & Llanvihangel Tal-y-Llyn for 1841 Census, where John POWELL 60 appears with Margaret 50 and Margaret 13 [HO107 piece 1370 /16/3 page 9].  I don't have access to 1851, so it would be useful to know the birthplaces as recorded then for Margaret and Sarah [assuming that the entries say more than Brecknockshire?].  It seems that Sarah may have given her Grandfather's name as her Father.  Unfortunately, the extracted baptisms for the village on the Hugh Wallis website only cover the period to 1848.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

Normally, in Workhouse Abstracts & Accounts, inmates were listed by parish and, if those records are extant, which I doubt,  they would show to which parish the charges should be attributed.

Thanks that probably explains alot it looks like John and Margaret Powells daughter Margaret may well be the mother of my 2x great grandmother Sarah Powell. I agree that getting access to the full details on the 1851 census will help confirm it so will have to go hunting for a copy.

When Sarah married in 1870 she gave John Powell as her father's name it was probably her grandfather after all.

Thanks very much for looking
