John and Stewart Herd - Quarry Contractors
« on: Monday 27 July 09 13:56 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,

I was pondering whether or not anybody out there has any info about dealing with the Quarrymen of Fife? My great great grandfather John Herd (1871-1947) is listed as being a Quarry Contractor on his mariage certificate (1903) and then on his death certificate, a Quarry Master.

A kind rootschatter found this for me last year and I ave stumbled across it again. The man I am focusing on in the fllowing linke is of course the John Herd in the middle of the page.

I am not sure if this is my great great grandfather or not, as my rellie was born in Denend, Fife, and died in Leslie.

If anyone has an information on John Herd Quarry Contractor (family say he had a quarry in Fife and another in Aberdeen but not confirmed), any help would be great, andvery much appreciated.

John's brother Stewart Herd (1883-1928) was also a contractor, and served in the Royal Engineers in the First World War. I have Stewart's war papers, but cannot find anything on the quarry front.

Regards and thanks for reading this post,

I don't know much about quarrys but I would doubt that this is the same person.  The bio states that John has a 60 year history in coal mining so it would be highly unlikely to find him referred to as quarry contractor/master on certificates.  In particular I don't think the switch from miner in 1946 to quarry master in 1947 fits.

Sorry I can't be more hopeful
