i think if you can find rhoda and john  on the census you might learn more. i checked all the combos i could and didnt find them.
the younger john emmett is from farsley and is easy to find in the census when he is married

Nice work perth tiger ... but just a thought regarding ...

i think mercy dies and william is married to mary hudson possibly her sister in 1857

If John Emmott was really the Nephew of James Smith, then his mother, Norah, must have been the sister or half sister of James’ mother or father. If he was not from the Smith side then Grace must have been the half sister of Norah. In which case, Mercy as shown in 1851 and Mary, as shown thenceforth, must be the same person.

What do you think ?

if mercy and mary were the same person then yes rhoda's son john emmot would be the nephew of grace and john.
if mary and mercy where sisters then rhoda would be the cousin of grace and john would be a couisin once removed to grace and john.
im sure that in those days john would have called grace and john auntie or uncle, not knowing the true relationship as we now know it to be. i myself have never called anyone or known them to be a cousin once removed etc until i started doing family history.
the only thing i can see to work out is who william married, mary or mercy. in 1851 mercy is shown as married so her maiden name is probably baker going by the birth cert of grace
there is a death for a mercy hudson in the right area in 1851/2nd q.
good work finding rhoda in the census

i think you might be right about mercy/mary.
there is a marriage for mary barker to joseph hudson in 1842 in bradford area and numerous deaths for joseph between the right dates.

hi. this is to thank Posteria and Perth Tiger.for their great help into my puzzle.have one other querry . nnearly on the same lines. asked for james smith death cert.found he died in 1849.was told in the colera out-break in selby at that time.
so bought the cert. was surprised to find two .one saying april 3rd.ceremony performed by J.L.Walton.in selby.
colera death. the other one .says.james smith died 31st march.1849.chronic hepatitas.present at death the mark of
Mary Lazenby .cow lane selby.as strange as it may seem. william smith and one elizabeth lazenby married in 1860. the parents of my recent querry james smith. do you think this suggests the cow lane cert is the one should go by.

Hi Perth Tiger. had a good look around elizabeths parents.
they were .thomas lazenby born 1816.kings lynn .england.
died 1887 selby. and grace beckettborn 1814.died 1878..
now thomas lazenbys parents were. william I lazenby born 1765.wressell.england. died 1841.and elizabeth martindale
she died in 1848 humberside.england.now there was a child born in1811.called mary lazenby.born barmby -on -the-marsh. yorkshire. am wondering if this is the mary. who was present at james death.
