Hi all

Received the email from Eric, and would just like everyone to know he has made my day.

The Grave M.I. that he sent me says the following:

In Loving Memory of
OLIVE
THE BELOVED DAUGHTER OF
WILLIAM & MARY WARD,
WHO DIED NOV 16TH 1912,
AGED 20 YEARS
ALSO THE ABOVE
WILLIAM WARD,
WHO DIED JULY 21ST 1918,
AGED 65 YEARS,
ALSO MARY JANE,
HIS BELOVED WIFE,
WHO DIED JAN 29TH 1926,
AGED 66 YEARS,
AND WAS INTERRED AT RURAL
CEMETERY NEW BEDFORD, U.S.A.

THY WILL BE DONE.

Since I have had this email from Eric I have been busy searching passanger lists for Ellis Island, and I think I have found them!!!

Mary Jane and her Son Herbert Ward arrived in the U.S.A on 24th July 1920.

They sailed on the Aquitania

They where going to visit Marys daughter a Mrs M. Hawkins at 84 Charlton Ave, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Her nearest relative in England was her daughter Mrs Alison. A. Newhall at 1 clyde St, Ashton-U-Lyne.

So from being stuck on this family only a few days ago. I have managed to find out when William and Mary and Olive died. Discovered the married surnames of her 2 other remaining daughters + I also probably now know that her daughter Mary and Son Herbert died in the U.S.A.

Except for a couple more Sons I have discovered new information on nearly the whole family.

Thank you once again for all your help. I am over the moon.

Haydn

P.S. By the way also had a reply from the GMCRO today. Unfortunately they did not find anything, but I was very impressed on how fast they replied to my query.

Hi Haydn

Just looked at a 1918 map of Audenshaw and Dale Street is off Guide Lane (Guide Bridge end of Audenshaw), my ancestors lived on Water St which is the next St down
Sadly a lot of rebuilding has gone on in that area

Hi Mo

Thanks for that. I was re-looking at my old census forms just to make sure I had not made a mistake. Can I be cheeky and ask if Lord street is near to Dale street. If memory serves me right Williams Parents where living on there at one point.

Thanks again everyone for all the help.

Hi Mo

Ah brilliant thanks for that. It sounds like you have a very handy map there. Most useful. So I take it that this street may also be classed as Guide lane. Just thinking ahead as it is Williams parents I am going to try to pin down next.

Thanks again

Hi Haydn
Both Dale Street and Lord Street were off Guide Lane which was the main road through Audenshaw

Hopefully there should be a map attached

Hi Mo

Thats absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much. I also notice a west street on there. I am sure I have come across that name in the past as well. This will make things so much easier to figure out.

Hi Haydn & Mo - great to see the map - Haydn have you spotted the "Hat Manufactory" on there  - looks like the family may have had a very short walk to work if they worked there!

Interesting to see the Sewing Machine works which I remember were there that far back as well (Jones, became Brother).

Ah yes I had not noticed it. Not to sure if William and Mary would have worked in the Hat Manufactory but I am betting that William Parents did. (Another William and Mary). I am sure that is why they would have upped sticks to move from Warwick to come to here.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Dear Haydn,
just to expand your quest further ...

my family name is Metcalf and they moved from Lincolnshire to Audenshaw in the
1870/1880's. One of them was Mary Jane Metcalf who was born in Hull c.1860 but
the family moved to Owston Ferry to join their relatives, before the mass exodus
to Audenshaw. My Great Grand parents lived at 2 Church Street which is only a
stones throw from your ancestors.

Small world ....

I look forward to your reply.

Hi Snorky

Good to hear from you. Yes I have a fair bit of information on the Metcalf line going back to the 1600's. There seems to be quite a few people out there researching the Metcalfs.

Maybe we could contact each other off list and share information. I would love to know where you fit into the tree.

Look forward to hearing from you

Actually it was No. 3 Church Street ...
My Mary Jane died before 1901 but it was a common combination of Christian names in our family.
Another branch of Metcalfs were living at Hooley Hill before the Audenshaw branch arrived. Both
branches may be derived from 'Blind Jack' Metcalf, one of his daughters went to live in this area
and it was common for families to move from relatives to relatives, wherever the work was.

I also noticed that my female ancestors were in the hat trade in this area!

My conversion to broadband should vastly improve my researches.
Keep in touch.
