Under Butler at Auchincruive 1851
« on: Saturday 02 May 09 15:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi

on checking Freecen 1851 for an ancestor - George Leishman, found him working at Auchincruive as an Under Butler along with 2 housemaids,1 kitchen maid and a housekeeper,no employer(s) mentioned, address only as Auchincruive,St Quivox.
Anybody out there with Auchincruive knowledge - were there any prominent people/houses 1851 that would require Under Butlers etc.
thanks for any help

Hi Fiona  Smiley

How about Auchincruive House:

http://www.ayrshirescotland.com/mansions/auchincruive.html

I'll go have another look at the census image and see if there are any clues - I remember checking the page before as well.

It does look like it as there is a Gardeners House and the West Gatehouse listed just after it.

For anyone with local knowledge, the page before is Gibbsyard Hamlet

Think it is Auchincruive House. I've found these:

Hi Gadget

thanks for your reply and link

I am trying to connect where George came about his macers job in Midlothian and was wondering if the connection could have started in Auchincruive.

Have been busy doing research on James Moncrieff - Advocate, even found a portrait of him on the internet along with him being given Freedom of the Edinburgh City,he seemed a fairly decent chap although not my chap.I found the Moncrieff Tullibole website and emailed the 7th child of Lord Moncrieff just to let them know the news ,that my ancestor was their Butler who then became a Macer, wonder if they will reply Roll Eyes.

They might, if they subscribe to noblesse oblige  Grin

It might have been a good reference from the employers. I think these type of jobs were either advertised or one heard about them or a recommendation was made  Undecided

One of my lines were quite posh but the poshness got filtered out by the time it got to my grt grandmother. Her son and daughter (my Gran) were house servants for distant relatives who lived in the local Castle.

your probably right re reference/job advertisement/recommendation and also in our family, the poshness if any has long gone Grin

I think I have found out all I can about George(today anyway Smiley)
I am happy he seems to had a better standard of life than most in my tree and going by his Will was financially ok or should I say his 2nd wife was after his death. He was no fool either his Will (writen in 1877)had conditions or burdens as he put it, that his 2nd wife  brought up his daughter from 1st marriage until age21 or marriage and she remained his widow,if she remarried everything went to daughter. He looked after his 2nd wife also with her having funds from Policy of Assurance by the Scottish Widows fund and Life Assurance Policy with bonuses. All ended well daughter lived to 58yrs as long as 2nd wife didnt remarry,I might check for that one day.
