Ancestors named WING
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 10:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I have ancestors named WING who lived at Denton, Lincolnshire. I've got back to William WING who died in February 1722/23. He married Mary LOVETT in 1686 at Denton. I can't find a baptism for him and there is a gap in the registers from 1653 to 1659. Huh   There seems to be two possible sets of parents christening children either side of the gap, John & Alice, and Richard & Jaine.

I'd be very grateful for any help.  Does anyone have any ideas where I look next?

A VERY long shot. Try to find the deaths of the two possible parent couples, sometimes more information is recorded than just the name and date of burial, so it is possible (though unlikely) that one record might say e.g. "John Wing, father of William etc. buried date". Good luck!

Hi,

I'm not sure but I might have Richard's burial in 1718 but if it is no help there.  John & Alce were more before the gap and it is possible they died between 1653 and 1659 but I will have another look as the registers are quite difficult to read.

William's children were Ursula, William, Robert, John, Richard, Elizabeth, and Robert. William and the first Robert both died as infants the rest all lived long enough to be mentioned in William's will. The boys names are used over and over again in later years. For girls the family favoured Elizabeth, Mary, Eleanor the latter two of these are definitely from the women of the family, (William's wife was Mary).  There might be a clue in the name Ursula as there is an Anthonie and Ursula who were baptizing children between 1605 and 1618 mostly at Denton but some at Sedgebrook which is not far away. However this is too early for Anthonie & Ursula to be my William's parents, they are more likely to be his grandparents.

I don't know these parish registers, but be aware that with the time being the Cromwellian period registration of births and marriages was very different. There are often gaps in the records at this time.

Redroger,

That is the problem there is a gap in Denton register from 1653 to 1659, there are, I think, other shorter gaps too.  But the one in the 1650s is probably when William was born and christened.  The Wing family were probably in the village from some time in the 16th century.

I think I have located burials for Richard and Jaine Wing - it looks like she died in childbirth and the child as well. I have a copy of the micro fiche of Denton register. Rather unusually in my experience Lincoln Archive allow individuals to buy fiche of the registers in their care so long as you sign the usual copyright forms. However I can no longer view the fiche at home as my fiche reader went bust some time ago; so re-checking the Denton register again will have to wait until I can get into the local library and borrow their reader.

Janeada, Check out West country genealogy, obviously there won't be a direct link, but it has some stuff about registration of births and marriages from the Cromwellian period which might give you some sort of pointer on how to find the record.

Thank you Redroger I'll do that.

I'm getting to the point where anything that might give me a lead is useful.  I'm reasonably certain the Wing family were there it is just so frustrating there being such a long gap in the registers. Various members of the family left wills too but none that I've found so far throw any light on William's parentage  Sad
