Harry Lewis England
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 14:03 UTC (UK) »

Hello good people

I am endeavouring to find out about my great grandfather, Harry Lewis England, particularly the circumstances of his birth, and the names of his parents.

I have discovered that he served in the Royal Navy (from 1 January 1873 to 25 September 1894) and have his service history. That service history notes that he was born on 13 September 1855 in France.

... but where in France?

... and who were his parents?

I am essentially an absolute beginner at genealogy so any help given will be very gratefully received

Thank you very much indeed

Hi Andrew and welcome to rootschat.

One question that would seem to me to need answering is whether  a birth [assuming English parents which may well be the case given the surname] in France for which you have an exact date  was registered in any form in England or do you need a French birth cert to find his parents.   I haven't a clue about this but I wonder if his father was in the army and his regiment was in France in1855.

No answers there but maybe teasing it out a bit will give some ideas- and then someone will answer who has more info.
Sorry not to be more help.

Well done Tati [as usual Grin  ]- the obvious thing to do was look
at census Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed silly me...

but in a way the myserty deepens in what an ag lab was doing in France with his wife?
Unliley to be on a holiday... so maybe the army?

So now you have his parents, Andrew.

Why not search the freebmd site to see if a marriage comes up for George England and a Mary Ann surname unknown.  Long shot but worth a try.

Hi Andrew and welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

There are a few George England / Mary Ann ? marriages, so it might be worth obtaining Elizabeth's birth certificate to confirm Mary Ann's surname:

Birth June Qtr 1856 Romsey Registration District (Hampshire, includes Lockerley) Vol 2c Page 69
Elizabeth ENGLAND

Kind regards

Andrew, just in case you don't know, the FreeBMD to look for registration of births, marriages and deaths from 1837 to about 1915 (it is an ongoing project) is at this website:

Born in France but christened in Hampshire quickly afterwards:

Extracted IGI christening record from the IGI:

Harry Louis England
22 July 1855 Lockerley, Hampshire

Father George England, mother Mary Anne

So 13 Sep 1855 seems wrong  Tongue

Adding a few bits about George ...

Here is his father in 1851, now remarried:
HO107/1672 7 6
West Dean, Wiltshire

Henry England, head, 59, Farm Labourer, b. Wilts Pitton
Charlotte, wife, 52, b. Hants Awbridge?
Edmund, son, unm, 23, Farm Labourer, b. Wilts West Dean
William Deadman, stepson, unm, 21, Farm Labourer, b. Hants Trenchmoor
David Deadman, stepson, 14, Farm Labourer, b. do.
George Wiltshire, lodger, unm, 36, Stone Mason, b. Hants Millbrook

George England's christening is on the IGI, showing mother Hannah:

George England, 7 Nov 1824 West Dean, Wiltshire
Father Henry England, mother Hannah

Other children with parents Henry and Hannah England in the same batch:
Ann, 11 Sep 1814
Charles, 4 Nov 1815
Maria, 30 Mar 1817
Harriet, 18 April 1819
Thomas, 25 Dec 1820
William, 12 Dec 1822
Edmund, 20 May 1827
Emma, 2 May 1830

Searching the IGI for a Henry England to Hannah marriage around 1813/1814, there's:
Henry England - Hannah Tubb
16 March 1814 West Dean, Wiltshire

Hi Andrew,
So Henry England second wife as shown in 1851 census seems to have been Charlotte Deadman- that would hav ebeen her married name presumably as she brought 2 sons to the marriage...

Great haul there from IGI and Tati's trawl thru it...

Dear 'charlotteCH', 'Tati' and 'Gaie'

Thank you so very much for taking the time and trouble to help me with my enquiry (my apologies for the delay is responding.... I've been away from the desk).

There is a lot of information here to absorb and 'get my head around'.

I am still not sure, however, how I shall progress with finding out where Harry Lewis England was born but I am going to the NA in July (to pursue my 'hobby' of researching the Great War) and will see if Harry Lewis' father was in the Army or the Navy around his birth date.

Anything else that you (or anyone) could suggest would be warmly and gratefully received

Thanks once again

Andrew
