Henry Bishopp
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 23:21 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to take my family back a further generation and have hit a major brick wall. Can anyone help please?

Henry Bishop married Elizabeth Rooks from Misterton in 1831 in Gainsborough.

I know of 5 children from the marriage:-

Charles William born 1832 in Gainsborough.
Henry Gustav's born 1833 in Gainsborough.
Frederick born 1836 in Clarborough.
John Henry born 1838 in East Retford.
Alexander Napoleon born 1841 in East Retford.

I have Elizabeth & the boys on the 1841 census living in East Retford but no Henry and I can't find living on his own anywhere - where could he be?

In 1851, the family, including Henry, are in Bermodsey, London and Henry gives his birth place as Pimlico, which I feel is could be wrong.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I could find Henry's parents and establish where he actually came from?

Many thanks

Why do you feel it is not the right birthplace?

Did he die before 1861?

Born 1808, just says Middlesex. Son Alexander, 30, unm, butcher is living with them

Cant find him 1881

Just one more question. Do you have Elizabeths parents and their marriage? I have found them.

Hi Trish & Carol,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

The reasoning behind my thinking that Henry might have been born outside of London was that I could find no trace of his birth in Middlesex and that there were lots of Bishop/ps in Nottingham around his time of birth. It seemed to fit that he would be local to the area of Elizabeth's birthplace.

I have Elizabeth's parents as William Rooks & Mary Cooke and that they married in Misterton 13th Jan 1796. Hopefully, that's correct  Smiley

How would I go about obtaining a copy of Henry & Elizabeth's certificate?

I'll check the Marylebone entry on the 1841 - do you think it's feasible that he left the family in East Retford while he came back to London?

Many thanks again for all your help  Wink

Hi Kim,
Yes, it is quite possible he left the family in Notts to go to London for business reasons. Remember it is only where they were on night of census just like us. So he could have been away for days, week or months.

The marriage can be looked up  and some people here have amazing access to records. You cant get a cert. as it was before 1837.
Just go to the homepage, scroll down to English Counties and then click on Lincolnshire board.
Have a look around a see how people post things and away you go.

I will have more of a look at the family later as I am about to go out.

Cheers,
trish
