institutions in Wirral Cheshire in early 1900's
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 23:41 UTC (UK) »

In the 1911 census I have discovered a Alfred Searles age 15, born in Essex, residing in a Wirral institution in Cheshire. What I would like to know what type of institution would it have been. And would it be possible to find out more details such as his records. Thanks

Have you purchased the transcript or are you just looking at the free index?

Without an address it would be impossible to give a correct answer

Hi Carole

Was only looking at the free index, thanks for your help, looks like I may have to buy some credits.

Hi, Jericho

Using just the free 1911 Census index:-

Alfred is described as an Inmate in the institution.

The institution is described as being in Registration District 451.

Using the 1901 Census as a guide, the only institution in this district would be the Wirral Union Workhouse at Clatterbridge. This would tie in with both the description 'inmate' & the RD 451.

You would have to view the original page, to confirm this.

The wirral Archives (which i use) hold the records for the poor law & Wirral Union Workhouse at Clatterbridge. I have to go there in the near future to find a lady on a record, that has refused to be found for around 5 months Grin So if you would like a look up let me know.It will be another notch on my belt because i have never had the need to to use them Grin
If you want to look for Alfred Searles age 15 let me know i will be glad to help.

Celia,

It would have been the workhouse at Clatterbridge, not the Birkenhead Workhouse in Tranmere. (which those pics are)

From the 1911 index the institution is not in Birkenhead registration district.

But remember it's all speculation at this stage.

Gwerninion and Celia

Thank-you both for your help, Celia I would be greatful for any information that I can get, Alfred is a real mystery to me, I believe that this maybe my grandfather, and as we don't have any early information on him, I would appreciate any help I can get. Why he would be in Wirral at such a young age is a mystery as he was orginally from Essex. Look forward to see what you come up with. Thanks

Jericho, this might be a possibility........

There was a training centre on the Wirral for wayward young boys, originally
housed on the training vessel "Akbar" the Akbar remained in use until Monday
December 2nd 1907, when the old sailing ship, unable to weather any further
service, was towed away to the breaker's yard. The school transferred to
Heswall on the Wirral, under the new title of a Nautical Training School,
where it continued to function until its closure in 1956.

Hi odessa

What an interesting article, I have a picture of Alfred as a young boy (about 15 or 16) in a similar type of uniform and I have not been able to date to  find out if he did infact serve his country, now this may answer a few questions, it just gets more exciting. Alfred in 1919 is found living in New Zealand, so he may very well have had something to hide.

you didn't mention about the photo and the uniform, you will have to advise me about what to do in regard to the search.
As far as i know, which isn't a lot Grin the institution had nothing to do with training of young men for a sea life.
I think Gwerninion is right, but i will wait and see Wink Can you scan the photo and put it on here it might give a clue.

Hi Celia,

Glad you enjoyed  Wink........ I had cause to "Google"for  Akbar a few years ago, but recently the question came up again and I found this new site - seems as though they took "naughty" boys from far and wide.
Might be worth Jericho checking with whatever Wirral Libraries are still open to see if they have anything in their local studies sections on "Akbar"
