The Goodlad Family
« on: Monday 04 May 09 10:03 BST (UK) »

I was wondering if anyone could be of help with my brick wall.

I am researching the Buckenham family of Suffolk, and the earliest verifiable reference for my particular line is for the marriage of Robert Buckenham and Rose Goodlad in Debenham, Suffolk, in 1681.

Before that, the register is missing for 25 odd years.

There are many Buckenhams about in Suffolk, but I'm yet to come up with a single Goodlad.

I did a search for Goodlad over the whole of Rootschat, and the only reference I found was on your board.

Is there anyone here who would know if any Goodlads headed South?

Greetings Sunnylew,

I have plenty of Fife Goodlad ancestry, the surname having been present in Fife since at least the early 1400s. Goodlad is an uncommon surname as far as Scotland is concerned, Fife and Stirlingshire seem to be the two geographical areas where it occurs.

Alas I don't know any who moved south of the border although this wouldn't surprise me at all as some of the families were well travelled, having moved to Orkney and Shetland in the late 1500s. In Fife St Andrews and Dysart seem to be the 2 areas where the surname occurs, I'm decended from the St Andrews lot and don't know too much about the Dysart families or their relationship to the St Andrews families so it's possible that your Goodlad ancestry is linked to the Dysart families.

Incidentally, there is a view that the surname is English in origin, but has certainly been recorded in Scotland since at least the 1300s.

Remember to look for the numerous varients of the surname - Goodlaid/Guidlad/Guidlaid/Goodload/Goodlet etc.

Happy hunting!

Thankyou for your quick replies.

I hadn't thought of replacing "oo" with "ui". I should have - I was teased mercilessly by friends while I lived in Edinburgh for pronouncing "Cruickshank" as "Crookshank".

Diddymiller, I'd love any Goodlad references you have. My Goodlad seems to have appeared from nowhere, and I hope that if I find her family, I might find my Robert's family as well.
