Josiah Allen
« on: Monday 04 May 09 11:19 UTC (UK) »

HI,
My 4 x great grandfather was Josiah Allen.  He was sentenced to 14 years transportation to Australia for forgery in 1816 at Lancaster.  His wife Mary anne was also sentenced to 14 years.  I am looking for records of the event, either newspapers or original records but I do not know which ones or where they can be found.  Can anyone help?

Thanks Smiley

Do you think this could have any connection?

In the Liverpool Mercury Friday, April 12, 1816; Issue 250
LANCASTER ASSIZES
Thomas Allen, for having in his possession, at Liverpool divers articles, for the purpose of forging Bank of England notes - Fourteen years transportation.
Mary Ann Allen, John Bell, Anthony Halliwell, Sarah Halliwell, James Quin and Stephen Williamson for having in their possession forged Bank of England notes, without lawful excuse.  Pleaded guilty - Fourteen years transportation.

Yes thank you MaryA, that is his wife.  She and the kids got transported about 6 months after Josiah.  Looks like the Allens were big into forgery....I wonder if Thomas was a brother? Where do I find the historical issues of Liverpool Mercury?
And thank you to you Woody ...that was where I got some of my information about him and his family.

Check with your local library if they have online access to the Old Newspaper site, if not then join the one for Lancashire since it seems to accept members outside it's own area
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/borrower/join.asp

Unfortunately I didn't see anything else online for this name, although the search isn't perfect and you might have more luck.

The Mercury is on film at the Liverpool Record Office, 4th Floor, William Brown Street Library.

Hi

Josiah Allen is also my 4xgreat grandfather, Have you had any lick locating his trial. Also I've been trying to find information regarding the 4 children said to be baptised in Kent prior to the family's move to Lancashire.

Have you looked at the Monaro Pioneers website for info regarding his son Benjamin, born in Sydney?

Hi Annie/Lucy,
I have quite a bit of information regarding the family.  Which child are you related to?

Hi Margaret

Thank you for your quick response. I'm a descendant of Benjamin Allen (the son born in Sydney) & Anne Waite. One of their daughters, Frances, had 2 sons, one of whom is my grandfather.

Any info would be great. It's a side of my family I'm only just learning about.

Thank You

Anne

Hi Anne, Good to hear from you.
My many times great grandmother was Josiah's youngest daughter Harriet. I'm relatively new at Rootschat also but I think there is a way to email but I'm not sure how. When I find out I will send you my email address and then I will be able to give you as much info as I can.

As Lucya has now made three postings she can use the private message system.  One of you click the green wiggly icon underneath the other's name and send your email address via private message.
