sorry if my earlier post was unclear, I would like to know, if possible how to establish if my g grandparents did in fact come from Belfast and Ballyjamesduff
as I only have hearsay to go by. I think I am asking to much as I have no dates or any other info to back this up So it looks like a lost cause. thanks for your interest

Can you give us an idea of dates so we can suggest sources for you to check.

I can only guess at a date, as my grandfather joined the Connaught rangers in 1914 at the age of 22 and he was born in scotland and not the oldest sibling
so I would guess 1880 ish. not much to go on

If your grandfather was born in Scotlnd c1880 he should hopefully be listed in some Scottish census records (1881?, 1891?, 1901?) with his parents which would help figuring out their ages.
Also, your grandfather's Scottish birth certificate should list date and place of parents' marriage so then you can order their marriage certificate and get more information, gradually working back through available records.

Thank you Aghadowey, I have his wedding cert so I will try for the birth cert and see if it gets me further. If I can get something solid it will be good as I will be visiting NI in the next month once more thanks for your help.
