Help please with Charles John DAVIS
« on: Monday 04 May 09 13:50 UTC (UK) »

HI...  have drawn a bit of a blank with a Charles John Davis c 1854.   Pretty sure he was born in Wales but no more information than that sadly.

I believe he married a Martha Mary Stephens but that may not have been in Wales.  Am awaiting a marriage certificate to come from Exeter ... the only possibility I can see
Marriages Dec 1881
DAVIS  Charley  Exeter  5b 213
STEVENS  Martha  Exeter  5b 213

Am looking for other possibilities in Wales.  Looking also for Charles John Davis' parents and any siblings so maybe they will show up on a census?  Later family death certificates list his occupation as butcher.  He was to later emmigrate to Australia.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Yvonne

Yvonne - hi   Smiley

Do you have Charles on any census  -  before of after he married ?  Do you know any children they had ?  When did they go to Australia ?

Sorry to ask so many questions  -  just trying to get a start on him Wink

Hi thanks

Yes  they had 2 children that I can find and anyone knows about.  I believe born in Australia but can only confirm one.
  • ALbert John Stephen DAVIS    born in Orange NSW in 1886
  • Charles John Stephen DAVIS  cannot find where he was born but around 1884 as family say he was older

In Western Australia census'  in 1901 we find both Charles and Martha (who called herself Mary Maud) lived in Norsmen.     in 1906  Charles John Stephen was with them again in Norseman
In 1916 just her and husband.

Family believed they emmigrated to Queensland but cannot find ship records or birth records for older son Charles there

Hope that helps?

Found two possible immigration records!

DAVIS Charles 38 Queen of the Colonies 7 Oct 1865 IMM/113 2 Z1957 M1696
DAVIS Martha 32 Queen of the Colonies 7 Oct 1865 IMM/113 2 Z1957 M1696

and

DAVIS Charles 27 Nowshera 14 Sep 1883 IMM/118 299 Z1960 M1699
DAVIS Martha 21 Nowshera 14 Sep 1883 IMM/118 299 Z1960 M1699

to Queensland....    Meaning if the 1881 marriage was right  and the 1883 birth approximate was right it would fit in.....

Well, the second of those looks most possible  -  the first couple would have been in their mid- 50's by the time Albert was born   Cheesy

I can't see a birth reg. for a Charles John Davis between 1850 and 1860 in Wales  -  I'll keep looking   Smiley

AM wondering if in fact his surname was DAVIES and changed along the way?  Seems to be more Davies' than Davis' in Wales?

Hello

Can't find a Qld birth for the couple either at https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQrySubmit.m

The child may have been born while they were moving between Qld and NSW and possible, baptised nad not registered.  Do you have his death registration?

BY 1916 he may have enlisted in the AIF/navy /airforce etc.

Certainly Albert John Davis' Record is available online from the National Archives

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

There is also a Charless John Davis aged 33/34 who enlisted in 1915 but I doubt this is you man. He was born in Melbourne and a quick search of teh records did not match any parents names.

HI  thanks for that....  I do actually have Charles John Davis' death certificate from Western Australia 1936....  On that it states he was born in Rockhampton Queensland.

Curious thing is it states he lived in Queensland for 1 year and Western Autralia for 45 years....  yet he was not listed on the passenger list when his parents arrived in Australia in 1883 and was older than his brother who was born in 1886.....  so the 46years  leaves 6 years anaccounted for.  It may just be an error by whomever gave his details upon his death.

OH another update!!!  Didnt realise this post was so old....  I found out this  Davis family was NOT from Wales but Farringdon Cornwall  :-)

Hi,

I wonder where he was when his brother was born?

There are births for Davis/Davies in Qld but none that maarched. Could he have been a relatives child? Perghaps orphanaed and taken in by Charles and Martha?

Might explain the lack of birth registraion.

will think about it for a while and then do some more research.

I like thinking outside the square so b prepared for  unusual ideas

Hello there

I did find this in Devon which is where Exeter is. Could he have been born beefore the marriage? and come out to australia later as a 6 year old  and giving Qld as a place of birth to disguise the fact?

Births Dec  quarter 1882  ie october, november and december
Stephens    Charles John        Newton A.    5b   130     Scan available - click to view
