only one name on free bmd marriage
« on: Monday 04 May 09 17:25 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for a marriage between a William Horsman and Harriott/Harriett Brunton before 1861, it looks like she was born around 1821 in Hampsthwaite William around 1820 in Fewston but neither is showing on the Calverley Hampsthwaite births  or marriages I believe this could be their marriage but only William's name is on Freebmd

Marriages Dec 1851 Horsman  William    Pateley Bridge  23 658a
no other names are showing on this page

I cannot find their marriage on Yorkshire BMD either

The reason I believe that William married Harriett Brunton is that on the 1861census in Headingley they have a visitor Joseph Brunton, William is born Fewston, Harriett Hampsthwaite and Joseph Scotton, some of their children are born around the Dacre area, in later years Joseph goes to live with his sister Jane back in Dacre where her family live.  I've not been able to track this family down yet as such but if there is a third sibling Harriet, Jane is born around 1821, Joseph around 1823 and now Harriett around 1821 it should be easier to find the family

Hi Scruffypup,

Looking at the other people who were married in the same quarter in Pateley Bridge, I've spotted a Harriot Bramley. The reference is transcribed as 650a but looking at the image, it looks like 658a to me (you can check the original on FreeBMD by clicking on the specs next to the page number).

(There isn't a Harri(e/o)t/t Brunton marrying in that quarter as far as I can see)

Hi Tati

Thanks for looking, it looks like this Harriett isn't going to be one of the elusive Brunton's after all, back to the drawing board again Sad I've only come across one other Brunton born around the Scotton/Hampsthwaite area and that's a Peter Brunton born around 1820, Christine had a look in the Farnham/Scotton registers for me and she cannot find this family either perhaps they weren't keen on baptisms, most of my ancestors must be atheists going by the number of missing baptisms on the IGI for their families and now it looks like my hubbys ancestors are the same.

Joseph must have been a friend when they lived in the Dacre area and not a relative after all.

I just checked census records for Harriet. 1861 says 1821 Hampstwaite, 1861 says 1817 Pateley Bridge and 1881 says 1821 Birstwith (if this is her: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=24943302)

There's a Harriet Bramley age 27 born Birswith on the 1851 census for Hartwith Cum Winsley

Hi Tati

Hampsthwaite and Pateley Bridge are just down the road from Scotton and Birstwith is just over 7 miles from Scotton so it does look like at some point Joseph and Harriett's families lived near by or were related in some way.

Hi Jeannie and Silver Cloud

Thanks for both your replies, Wharfegen is a great site, it's a shame about the missing years in the registers, it's the same in the Hampsthwaite Parish registers book that  I checked in the local library.  I'll keep a look out for a connection between the Horsman and Brunton families and I'll let you know if I find anything,
