« on: Sunday 03 May 09 19:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi does anyone have any info on this family particular Jane Maguire, in 1881 census says she was born in Harome to Thomas and Catherine Maguire, and they were living at Cowhouse bank, cannot seem to trace her birth which would be around 1869.
Thanks Kim

Hi Kim,

Must admit I'm struggling to find her birth too, I hope you don't mind but I thought it easier to post the details from 1881 rather than having to keep referring back.

1881 census:
RG11/4823, Folio 41, Page 4

Yorkshire, Helmsley
Cowhouse Bank

Thomas Maguire, h. mar, 47, SieveMaker b. Bilsdale West Side
Catherine, wife, mar, 36, b. Scarbro'
William, son, 14, b. Pickering
Mary, dau, 9, b. Whitby
Jane, dau, 12, Harom
Ishmael, son, 8, b. Lastingham
Margaret, dau, 5, Daughter of Thos Maguire, b. Cropton
Thomas, son, 1, Son of Thos Maguire, b. Oswaldkirk

All born in Yorkshire.

Kind regards,

Pels.

If this is the same family, the 1891 has Catherine's birthplace as Galway in Ireland, the census page has confused me a bit because it has Catherine as wife, but Thomas isn't present, although the line above hasn't been filled in ??

1891 census:
RG12/3966, Folio 9, Page 12

Yorkshire, Scarborough
1, Poads Yard

Catherine Maguire, wife, mar, 44, Charwoman, b. Galway, Ireland,
Ishmael, son, 16, Herring House, b. Pickering
Ellen, dau, 12, b. Pickering
Thomas, son, 10, b. Pickering
John, son, 5, b. Scarborough
Catherine, dau, 3, b. Scarborough

With the exception of Catherine, all born in Yorkshire.

Hiya Pels
Yes they seem to be a mystery can't seem to trace Jane at all regarding her birth can't even get the brother Ishmael neither, tried that cos the names so unusual. Ive got Jane later on but its the birth i wanted.
Thanks again Kim

I'm wondering why in 1881, the enumerator chose to put the last two children as son/dau of Thos Maguire ?

1901 census:
RG13/4531, Folio 155, Page 11

Yorkshire, Scarborough
2, St Mary's Place

Catherine Maguire, wife, mar, 58, Cook Domestic, b. Ireland
Catherin, dau, 12, b. Yorks, Scarbro'

Have you seen the possible marriage of a Thomas Maguire to a Catherine Duffy, and do you have Thomas in 1871 Kim .. ?

The reason why I'm interested in the census returns Kim, your initial post implied we were looking for children born to parents who were both born in Yorkshire, per the 1881 details.

If both Thomas and Catherine were of Irish decent which now looks a possibility, the spelling of Maguire could alter significantly ??

Hiya Pels
I think its a very confusing family. I have Ishmaels baptism (brother of Jane) baptised 23/2/1874 at ampleforth abbey and parents are thomas and catherine maguire nee raftery,in 1881 catherine the mother appears to be born in scarboro yet in 1891 and 1901 she appears to be born in ireland.ive got a marriage certificate for a thomas maguire and a catherine raftree (bearing in mind sometimes people didnt spell names correctly) for 1861. Still doesnt solve my initial problem i can't find Janes birth or baptism. Huh
Thanks again Kim
