COSTELLO inquest
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 17:35 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace more information about a fatal accident at Gossages Soapworks, Widnes in 1902.

My ancestor, Timothy Costello of Warrington, was working there as a bricklayer's labourer. He died of injuries received in the accident on 31 May 1902 when he fell from a plank. He died on 4 June 1902 in Warrington Infirmary, the inquest was held by Lancashire coroner S Brighouse on 5 June and the verdict was Accident.

Is there any way of getting more information about the inquest, the accident (a record book maybe?) or finding out more about Gossage's? Would it have been reported in the press? If so, which paper?

Thank you all in advance for your help.

christmassy,

These sort of incidents and any subsequent inquests were often reported in full in the local newspaper of the day.

Warrington Library have an archives and local studies section and may well have micro films of the local newspaper.

http://www.warrington.gov.uk/libraries/local_library/Warrington_Library.aspx

It may be worth you emailing them. Some Libraries if you give them a specific date and if they have the available time and staff will provide you with a photocopy of a newspaper article.

hi christmassy,

Glad you were successful, and so quick too! There's lots of useful stuff in the local papers, it's just getting to them and having the time to sit and search  Wink

There is a possibility that the accident to Timothy Costello was described in an earlier issue - one for future investigation?
