If you go yo this site: http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_place_search_form.php

and put Fermanagh and Ballagh into the releveant search boxes, there will be three options come up. Click the maps icon on the third option, and a map will open in a new window showing you an old map. Then use the slide device at the top right hand side of the map to go from the old to the newer map. You should be able see ballagh. Zoom in and use the slide device again to show the actual townland of Ballagh from the Griffiths valuation of Ireland (c 1860's).

You can also find details of the townland at : http://www.seanruad.com/ but you must use "anywhere in the field" for the search method for some reason.

Townland Acres  County       Barony     Civil Parish  PLU Province
Ballagh     238    Fermanagh Clankelly  Galloon       Lisnaskea

Thanks KDDA for that info.

Someone had said my ggrandfather Thomas Hall was born there, but since I have been able to check parish records and found that he was born in Stranafeley, Brookborough, Co Fermanagh.

His entire family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1853 leaving him behind as a 2 year old. Why they did this, we will never know, nor it sees, will I ever find out who brought him up.

I did learn that Monaghan and Fermanagh were particularly badly hit by the famine, which would explain their departure.

Thanks for your input

best wishes

It may be that he wasn't well at the time the family planned on leaving Ireland and they thought he wouldn't survive the journey to Australia.

Thanks that is more than likely the explanation. Ironically, he lived a very long life in Belfast- to the age of 90, whilst his siblings in Victoria died relatively young!

Brookeborough isnt too far away from Ballagh Cross.  If there are any landmarks or places you would like to see, please let me know, I can get a photograph for you.

Thank you KDDA that is very kind of you indeed, however I have been to Brookborough and taken a photo of Aghavea Church Of Ireland, where my ancestors were baptised. I cant think of any other landmarks, but if there's anything else you know of, I'd be delighted so see a photo of it.

many thanks
