Springboks Scavenger Hunt...Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 11:11 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt.........I like this one, I think you will too.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                                   **************************

I am trying to tie in a James Bedford b.1813 City of London to my other  Bedford relations

I have confirmed them  from Palotts and IGI extracted  entries ,marriage and childrens birth, Certs and Census returns for  the following. The majority were Poulterers

William and Elizabeth Bedford probably born circa 1780's are given as parents to Arabella,(b.1801)Ann,(b 1803)(Palotts)Christchurch Newgate Middx   William (b.1806)and my (G(x2) Grandfather)  John Bentley Bedford.(b.1808) IGI (Both Births and Baptism as St.Faiths under St.Pauls.)

Ann( widow) Married Francis James(Widower)  Malpas (poulterer)at Christ Church St. Giles in 1836 (Palotts)

1841 living at 25 Paternoster Row St.Faiths (Newgate)London(North of the Thames) with the 4 sons from Francis' 1st marriage

Their children together were

John Douglas .1836

Rebeckah Ann   29/8/1838  birth Cert.b. Christchurch  (  Father Coffee house Keeper of  "Three Tuns Passage")Cert issued London North West/ City of London (Mother Formerly Brown, formerly Bedford.)

Mary A              1871 Census aged 28 ( a Milliner)  with Ann. No sign after that

Emma Elizabeth  1847  (Married Edward Bunting -no Children)

1851 The Malpas family were living South of the Thames in Christ Church Southwark Surrey.

Francis Malpas 51 Poulterer
             Ann       47
Francis Ja (Son of Francis 1st. Marriage)  19  poulterer  St Faiths
Chas Henry     ditto                                 18  Printers Machine Boy  Surrey Christ Chur
Rebecca Ann                                          13  London Christ Church
            Mary                                                        9  London St Faiths
Emma Elizabeth                                       3  Surrey Christ Church
Father Francis James Malpas died in 1853.

Also on  1851 Census (looks like 4? Three Tuns Passage)  James Bedford Married Head  age 38   poulterer  London Christchurch London( North of Thames)

                      Elizabeth Humphries           24   Housekeeper        Barnet
                      George Humphries              18     carman                ...do...
John Malpas                       14   Poulterer               London  No relationship given to Head

In 1833 on Palotts there is a marriage between James B. Bedford and Emma S Coleman St Pancras Middx

1841  James and Emma with 5 children living at Clare Market St Clement Dane. (Strand)

Births of all children on IGI all boys having 2nd given name as Coleman Bedford.Dau Emma  Kingbury Bedord

No sign of mother Emma on the 1851 Census

1861 Presumably Wife Emma has died. James now married to Elizabeth(Humphries?) b Stanmore.

Apart from this one 1851  Census ( with John Malpas )and Three Tuns Passage there is no other link that I have found between James and the rest of the Bedfords.

I have all the Census returns for Mother A, Rebeckah (Unmarried) and Emma .

Unable to find any marriages for John Malpas but 1861 census Rg9/259/100/66  has a John  age 25,poulterer, City  married to a Harriet

1871 a John age 32 poulterer City of London married to an Emma b.Cambridge Son Charles age 10 b.Shoreditch and son Edwin age 1 b. Shoreditch  Rg10/441/24/43 and 44..

Similarly for Mary A Malpas b.1843 (Islington St Mary.) She is last seen on  1871 Census aged 28 ( a Milliner)  with Ann.

Hopefully someone can find possible marriages for John and sister Mary, but having found out so much already, I'm not really expecting miracles !!

Hi Toni,

No sign of James birth at all,( and just a palotts marriage to Emma Coleman)
See ref. to Coleman as middle name for the sons.

so he could be a cousin, brother or even half sibling.  The assumptions I have made are somewhat tenuous!

The last census entry for James was in 1871 giving Birth place as City of London. RG10/428/f11/p15

a sudden inspiration ! If Emma died before 1861 and James was remarried to Elizabeth by 1871 then I should be looking for that  marriage.

Great to have input from all

Hi Toni,

Pleased that you feeling better.

James birth was circa 1813 according to the Census dates.

Haven't located a date of Death yet.

Had a good search for a possible date of 2nd marriage (Freebmd and Ancestry)but couldn't find any relating to an Elizabeth, so  no luck there.
