My great grandmother married a Harry Collins in 1889. He then died (I think - I've yet to clarify it) and I thought she re-married my great grandfather, Leopold Ward before giving birth to my grandfather, in 1901. On my grandfather's birth certificate her name is given as Annie Ward formerly Collins.
But I can find no trace of this marriage - only one in 1930! So would Annie have had to change her name in order to be known as Annie Ward, or could she just have done it automatically, no questions asked?
Is there anywhere in Norwich that I could write to to find out (somewhere where deed polls are registered for example?)

Hi,
You might be looking for a non-event. My gt.grandma had 10 children and on all their birth certificates she is Ellen xxxx, formerly xxxxx but never married their father. No checks in those days!

Ok, please try and get this straight for me
Annie ? married Leopold Ward, then married Harry Collins and the remarried to Leopold Ward
Otherwise maybe she left Harry, had your Grandfather and had to wait to 1930 to marry him again as Harry Collins was still alive.
Have you any of them on census entries etc? What other children were born to them? Either marriage.
What was Annies maiden name before either marriage??

Sorry, Trish, I agree, I've re-read it - it's clear as mud! I'll try and clarify:
Annie Greenberry (b Chelsea 1869) married Harry Collins c 1889. Did he die? Did they divorce? My mum told me years ago that he had died, but I don't know for a fact - I haven't yet been able to clarify it.
Annie then has my grandfather Percival Ward, born 1901 in Heigham, Norfolk. Leopold Ward is given as father on Percival's birth certificate, and Annie's name is Annie Ward formerly Collins. But I can't find any trace of a marriage between them at this point. The only marriage I have for them is in June 1930 in Edmonton (where her name is given as Annie Ward).
On the 1901 census, they are living in Heigham, Norfolk, she is Annie Ward, Wife, Married. On the 1911 census she is living in Edmonton, as Annie Ward, wife, married.
There were no other children born that I am aware of!
I don't have anybody left in the family who can help me out now, so that is all I have to go on. Perhaps it is all too vague to be able to clarify. I just hoped that maybe somebody out there had access to some register that I haven't seen!

Hi again,
I think I took what you said literally when you used the words re-married
Ok Annie was born Chelsea according to 1901 census when she is with Leopold and Percy aged 8mths. They are living in Norfolk. RG13/1843/103/47
Marriage;
Harry Edgar COLLINS June 1889 Chelsea on same page Annie GREENBERRY or Alice Annie KIDNEY
1891 Census Harry.E. Collins and Annie are in Kensington, with no children. Harry is born 1864, Fulham. RRG12/21/52/54
There are only 23 deaths for a Harry Collins 1891-1932 in Middlesex ( this is presuming as a coffee house keeper he would have stayed in Kensisngton) Some are too old or too young given his DOB abt 1864.
this is a probable death;
Harry Collins March 1900 Kensington 1a 114 Age 35
Why they would wait til 1930 to marry I cannot explain
Trish

Hi again,
For some reason didnt get notification of your post Maybe as they were only seconds apart.
Ah well I enjoyed chasing them done even if you have most of it.
The death is the most likely though
On the 1911 Census doesnt it say HOW MANY YEARS MARRIED???

Hi Trish - thank you so much for that. Most of it I did know, just not a year of death for Harry - assuming that is the one! Will get death cert - it might show the informant as Annie.
I just have the transcript for the 1911 census - but the column for years married is empty - maybe that's because they weren't married? I will have to get the original next time I have some credits to see if it is on there.
Thanks again for your help!
