Jessie Gardiner married in Dumfries
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 19:33 UTC (UK) »

I have just made the  discovery that my great grandmother was born in Scotland. She was married in Dunfries 29/05/1854. Her name was Jessie Gardiner she married Martin Casey from Roscommon Ireland.
Her birth was  January 1st 1831.  There are several Gardiners that could be her parents, but i am having trouble tracking her down on the census. I believe her parents may have been  either Joseph Gardiner and Catherine McNabb from Creif Perthshire? or James Todd Gardener and Agnes Shannon both are recorded on the IGI as having a daughter with the name of Jessie b.1831.
Is there anyone out there with access to birth or baptism records who may be able to confirm the right parents.
Thankyou
Joyce

Have you checked her actual birthplace on any of the censuses after she married?  Although she married in Dumfries - was she also born there?

Hi Joyce,

I see from a previous post about Martin Casey that you already know that he was living in the Isle of Man in 1871 census.

The image shows wife Jessie to have been born abt 1836 in Aberdour, or Aberdeen, (not clear), Ireland, although that is probably Aberdour, Fife, Scotland, or there's another Aberdour in Aberdeenshire?

Their eldest child Mary A was born abt 1855 England, and next child Jessie born abt 1860 Douglas, Isle of Man, so I would expect them to be in the I.O.M in 1861 census (not found yet though)

1881 & 1891 census just give her birthplace as Scotland, but still give her date of birth as around 1835, can I ask where you got her birthdate 1st Jan 1831 from?

Still can't find the family in 1861, Isle of Man, England or Scotland, so perhaps they were visiting relatives in Ireland?

In 1851 Scottish census, there is a Jessie Gardner, aged 15, house servant to Alexr. Aaron and family, living in Whithorn, Wigtownshire, she was born Aberdeenshire.  Wigtownshire is quite near to Dumfriessshire, where your Jessie was married.

This Jessie in 1841 Scottish census is probably the daughter of Samuel and Jessie Gardiner, who are living in Whithorn.  CSSCT1841_151-0317 1841   ED 1 Page 23

Have you looked for her marriage and birth on scotlandspeople?  You need to find out if her birth was actually 1831 or, as per the census, 1835/6

Joyce, you really need to spend some time (and credits!) on scotlandspeople, find the marriage and see what details are given, then check for her birth

Hi All  Smiley

No more detail than you have both found, but this link shows Jessie's birth as you have found (taken from censuses?):

Thanks for those links, Monica, seem to confirm that the Jessie I found in 1841 and 1851 is indeed the right person, and that the birthplace was Aberdeen, not Aberdour as I first read it on the 1871 census.  Smiley

Over to you, Joyce!

Hi Joyce and others - Jessie was my great-great-great-grandmother  - you have tracked down much of what I could find. I was not able to find the household origins in Aberdeen, or what happened to Samuel Gardiner and his household. Jessie, as you know, went to Douglas where she and Martin made umbrellas at 68 Duke St, Onchan. I have her down as having 7 children, the oldest being Mary Ann whose birth was registered at Poulton le Fylde in Lancs. she had 5 children, including another Jessie who was my greatgrandmother.

I have more details of this family if you're interested.

Thankyou all for all the information. You are right if i am going to pursue this i will have to subscribe to Scotland's people. Until yesterday when i decided to look for Martin and Jessies marriage I was under the impression that although Jessie was born in Scotland it was just because her family were passing through when Jessie was born and that they were actually from Ireland
The 1861 census records Jessie and Martin's eldest daughter daughter Mary Ann as living with her grandparents John and Ann Mc manus in Poulton-le Fylde. So i wrongly presumed that Jessie was Mcmanus before marriage. The whole family are difficult to pin down. Mary Ann married John Hart  on the Isle of man and their first child was born Burnley Lancs. next two St. Helens Lancs. fourth  in Rainton Durham and so on. They also used two other surnames throughout their lives. Holden and Holding. So you can see the problems. I got Jessie's birth from Family search by the way.

Ian
I would love to hear of anything you may have on the Gardiners and Caseys. Did you find them as confusing as i have? I did say that Jessie was my g g grandmother. in actual fact she is my husbands family.
My lot are nowhere near as difficult.
Regards Joyce.
