Hi again

Have you got any other information we can use to try and find his wife on the 1861?  When and where were they married, maiden name, children's details, wife's place of birth etc would be useful.

Hi David,

I would say that the death notice is certainly him.
He would have been approx 25 years old at that time.
I have not been able to locate a marriage for him. I have them on the '51 census
After 1856 he only had one sibling left in the UK, Sarah, she was 10 years older than him & married to a chap with a surname of WOOLLETT.

That is all I can tell you at this stage.

Cheers

Hi Geoff

Could it not just mean that John also emigrated after the death of his mother and followed his other family members - you imply family members had emigrated?
The 1851 census shows a John Becraft and family with son John in the East end of London, north of the river Thames, so the Bethnal Green death registration could be connected to this family.

There seems only one Sarah Becraft marriage between 1841 and 1861 but not to a Woollett and again north of the Thames

Marriages Jun 1842  BECRAFT  Sarah    Chelsea  3 38
either
HOLMES  William     Chelsea  3 38
or
MILLARD  Joseph     Chelsea  3 38
or
SCOTT  William     Chelsea  3 38
or
SMITH  Silvanus     Chelsea  3 38

However a Susan Becraft did marry a Joseph Woollett at Christchurch Newgate in 1836 and the granddaughter with the family in 1851 is Susan Woolett aged 6.

SUSAN BECROFT
JOSEPH WOOLLETT
Marriage:  02 AUG 1836   Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London

There is also a marriage of a Joseph Becraft to Sarah Fear in 1834 St George Camberwell (perhaps a little to early for a child of Joseph and Elizabeth) and

Marriages Jun 1840
BECRAFT  Elizabeth     Lambeth  4 253
either
ANDREW  Thomas    Lambeth  4 253
or
AYTON  William     Lambeth  4 253
or
NEWELL  William     Lambeth  4 253
or
O'NEIL  Richard     Lambeth  4 253

Possible baptism

ELIZABETH BECROFT
Birth:  03 JUN 1820
Christening:  21 AUG 1820   Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London
Father:  JOSEPH BECROFT
Mother:  ELIZABETH

and possible for Elizabeth on the 1851 census

1851 census HO107 1573 folio 418
Belmont Place Lambeth
Thomas Andrew 44 Head Married Trade Baker  Lambeth Surrey
Elizabeth Andrew 30 Wife Married Hoxton Middlesex
Thomas Andrew 10 Son
Fanny Andrew 8 Daughter
Elizabeth Andrew 4 Daughter

so potentially there could be other older children for Joseph  and Caroline/Elizabeth who do not appear on the 1841 census. On the 1841 census adult ages, those over 15, are usually rounded down to the nearest 5. Elizabeth's age on the 1851 census indicates that her marriage to Joseph could have taken place any time from circa 1817 onwards.

1841 census HO107 1057/7 folio 12
Princes Street Lambeth
Joseph Becraft 40 Lime burner Not born Surrey
Caroline Becraft 40 Not born Surrey (age on 1851 census given as 53 and Elizabeth which corresponds to the death registration in 1851)
Sarah Becraft 15 Born Surrey
Henriette Becraft 7 Born Surrey
John Becraft 5 Born Surrey

It might be worth obtaining a copy of Elizabeth Bedraft's Prerogative Court of Canterbury will (which can be purchased online immediately from Tha National Archives) to see how many children she had and where they were at the time of her death.

Will of Elizabeth Becraft, Widow of Lambeth , Surrey 17 March 1852 PROB 11/2148

Hi Valda,
Thank you very much for your detailed reply to my request.
The WOOLLETT connection doesn't come from a child of Joseph, but from his sister, Susannah.

You are right there are other children to Joseph & Elizabeth that I obviously haven't found.
The 1820 birth for Elizabeth I would say is their first child. This would give Joseph an age of 23 or 24 years, and Elizabeth an age of approx  22 years.
Sarah was born in 1825, then I have a gap of 13 years before the next birth.

Joseph was the brother of the John BECRAFT this thread started out to find.
They came from a family of 12 siblings, all born in Hertfordshire.
Their brother Edward is my ggg grandfather, a convict sent to Austrtalia.

Onnce again thank you very much.

Hi

1851 census HO107 1571 folio 53
59 Princes Street Lambeth
Elizth Becraft 53  Head Widow Lime Merchant Hertfordshire
Henrietta Becraft 18 Daughter  Lambeth Surrey
John Becraft 15 Son Lambeth Surrey
Susan Woollett 6 Grandchild Lambeth Surrey

SUSAN BECROFT
JOSEPH WOOLLETT
Marriage:  02 AUG 1836   Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London

There is a possible for Joseph Woollett in Newington gaol in 1841. By 1851 it looks as if both Joseph and Susannah Woollett have possibly died.

You can access Elizabeth's will from here
