his father was david dickson 1803 adn elizabeth marshall 1802-1876

Don't know what you have already but found what appears to be the family on 1841 Census for Penicuik:

Address - Kirkhill
David Dickson, M, 30yrs, tailor, bn Midlothian
Betsy      "        F, 30yrs,                      "
Robert     "       M, 16yrs, tailors app    "
Jean        "        F, 12yrs                       "
Isabella   "        F, 10yrs                       "
Betsy       "        F, 8yrs                         "
David       "       M, 6yrs                         "
Margaret  "       F, 4yrs                         "
Anne        "       F, 1yr                           "

No sign of William at the address but this may be him:

1841 Census for Penicuik
Address Auchincorth
William Dickson, M, 14yrs, Ag Lab, bn Midlothian

William's brother Robert mentioned above can also be found on IGI christened on 06 Sept 1825 at Penicuik.

There is also a pedigree resource file on IGI for William Dickson giving more detail of parents and g parents etc.
