Is she or isn't she?

Can I have your thoughts on this please  Undecided

I have just received the death cert for a Kate Mara....
26th Aug 1910, Kenmare Workhouse
Kate Mara, Templenoe, spinster aged 86 years, servant, Senile decay.

The problem I have is with the "spinster" bit, I believe this is my 2xg/grandmother.

On the daughter's baptism at Templenoe ...
Born on 6th August 1859, Baptised on 27th August 1859,  Sara Francesca, the illegitimate daughter of John McClure and Catherine Mara of Dromore.

I know for a fact that the surnames on the baptism were switched around and should have read John Mara and Catherine McClure...maybe to save face for the illegitimate birth  Embarrassed

I do not know if Catherine and John ever married.
Is it possible she was still known by the name Mara for the rest of her life???
help please, Sylvia  Undecided

If she never married then the death certificate would certainly list her as spinster. Who's the informant omn the certificate- a close relative?

Sorry for the delay...sleep, now off to work soon.
The informant on the cert was John O'Sullivan, occupier presumably the Suuperintendant.

I do know that John Mara had another daughter by another woman (Sarah Fuller) a few years later. She is my other Maternal 2xg/grandmother

Her details would have been noted down at the time of admittance to Workhouse. Presumably that's where Superintendent got details which were entered on certificate.

Mmmm another puzzle then  Huh
The only other explanation is that Kate is John's sister...Templenoe was not that big a place.

I'm not saying 'spinster' was correct, just that she was probably noted as one when she entered the workhouse.

THanks Aghadowey
I emailed the Kerry Archives last night re the Workhouse records
They could possibly throw some light on this.

I do know that her daughter (my g/grandmother) was living in Dublin at the time but left immediately after (before 1911 census) and went back to Scotland. Now she spent more or less the rest of her life in a lunatic asylum with severe depression.

Oh what a family!!!
