Unwin Family in Cambridge.
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 15:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

This is a big ask but i'll give it a try.

I am trying to trace my Grandfather but owing to the fact that him and my father didn't get on very well i have limited info to start with.

His name was: Reginald Percy Unwin
Occupation:     Stonemason
Spouse:           Edith Mildred Brett

They were living at 138 Gwydir Street Cambridge in 1942 when my Father was born.

Sorry but this is all i have got at the moment,so any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

I would think the best thing is to get the marriage certificate
Reginald P Unwin married Edith M Brett in 1938 as per Camdex

If you check FreeBMD at http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl there's a Reginald P Unwin born in the June quarter 1913 in Cambridge registration district where the mother's maiden name is Scott.

You'll get his father's name from the marriage certificate, and if you buy the 1913 birth certificate as well you'll see if it's the same Reginald from the father's name.

Once you've got his father's name hopefully you should then be able to trace him in censuses - there were 76 Unwins living in Cambridge in 1911!

Help needed please.......is there another way other than applying for the relative certs of getting "maiden names"?

May be a silly question but if you don't ask you don't get Smiley

Thanks

Whose maiden name are you seeking?

It depends on the date - if it's after 1911 maiden names can be gleaned from the GRO index in the case of births, and the other party's name is given in the index in the case of marriages from 1912. Check http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl. for what is available.

But not everything is available online for free. Sometimes you have to invest £7 to ensure that you're not reseaching someone else's ancestors

The alternative is to check the parish register, if you know the parish. Generally it's quicker and cheaper to shell out £7 for the certificate

Hello, I think your family is my family of Unwins. My grandmother was Sarah May known as May Unwin daughter of Joseph John Unwin and Elizabeth Scott. There is a mystery here though as Joseph John was registered as Illegitimate to Annis Unwin in 1866. Annis then married  two months later to a Henry Chapman.  Annis was then back at home under the name of Unwin. For years i couldn't find the marriage of Joseph John and Elizabeth and then I found it he was Joseph Chapman.  I am still trying to work it out.
