Hi,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice about my Smiths that I have started to research?
My 2x Great Grandparents married in 1917 in Nottingham. Their names are George Smith and Emma Stevens.
The details from the marriage certificate are as follows:
George Smith, 45, Widower, Coal Miner. Father: John Smith general labourer (Deceased).
The two witnesses were Arthur Goulding and Florence Shaw.
I am stuck with how to trace George Smith further back, because the only details I have are from the marriage certificate.
I know George Smith had at least two children from his first marriage because a lady from another forum, looked on the electoral register for the address which is on the marriage certificate.
On the electoral in 1933-4 George and Emma have a John George Smith and Walter Smith living with them.
John George and Walter wasn't Emma's sons, so i'm assuming they may have been George's from his previous marriage.
I have looked on the census records but there are quite a few George Smith's with father John Smith, and without knowing where he was born I can't narrow the results down.
I have had a look to see if the witnesses have a connection to the Smith family, but can't find anything obvious. I have traced Emma back and don't need any help with her.
Any help or advice would be truly appreciated.
Kind regards
Kelly.

Hi Jen,
Unfortunately, I don't know the ages of the sons. I only found the sons names from the electoral register.
I have had a look on the 1911, but there is still to many results to narrow it down!

Hi
There are several details I need to know. Was it a church wedding and if so what parish? I have looked on NFHS CDs but cannot find them. I have also looked on ancestry and still cannot find them. You said you have details of electoral rolls, where did they live? It looks like he was born around 1872 and the closest is in Walkeringham which is in South Yorkshire now. I have looked for John George and Walter, how old are they? Are they children or parents, inlaws, brothers etc? If you have traced Emma back when was she born, where did she live and who were her parents and siblings? Have you found any of them on any census?
I know I am asking alot of questions but I need to eliminate all the results and narrow down the searches.
Jane

Hi Jane,
George and Emma married at the Nottingham Registry office in 1917. George's address is given as 7 Mitre Terrace, Commercial Street, and Emma's address is given as 6 Commercial Street. I think 7 Mitre Terrace was Emmas address with her first husband.
Emma was born in Grantham Lincolnshire and moved to Nottingham with her first husband between 1907 and 1911. On the 1911 census Emma is living with her first husband and their address is: EBURY YARD COMMERCIAL ST NOTTINGHAM. Emma's parents both died before 1908 and she was an only child.
Between 1911 and 1914 Emma moved to 7 Mitre Terrace, Spring Close, Lenton Nottingham. I believe Spring Close is Commercial Street.
In 1914 Emma's first husband was killed in action, his address is given as 7 Mitre Terrace, Spring Close lenton nottingham.
I think John George Smith and Walter Smith are George's sons from his first marriage. I have been in contact with another family member and they have said that George had a child called Jack, with his first wife. Unfortunately, I don't know how old John George or Walter were.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice about how to trace my Smith's further back?
George Smith was born c1872 and married Emma Stevens 1917.
I know George had a son named Jack (John George) from a previous marriage but I am not sure when and where Jack was born.
I have tried looking at the 1911 census but there are to many George Smiths living with Jacks and John's to narrow the results down.
Does anyone know anyhting I could try to trace the Smiths further back?
Any help would be truly appreciated.
Kelly.
