Finding WILLIAM KISSOCK
« on: Thursday 07 May 09 17:03 UTC (UK) »

My gggrandfather WILLIAM KISSOCK married Jessie Caverhill 11 Nov 1846 at Bellevue Cottage, Lower Lachine, Province Quebec, Canada. Officiated by Rev. Wm. B. Bond of St. Stephen's Anglican Church. He is listed in Canadian Genealogy Indices as being a merchant and living in Toronto, County York, Ontario Province at that time. In 1846 he was listed under D. &  N. Kissock Co, a grocery in partnership with his brother, David. In 1856 he was an insurance broker and land agent. He died in 1859, age 34, of apoplexy. Family lore has it that he was born in Nyack NY in 1825. Other sources suggest 1810 in Scotland.
He and Jessie had 4 children, John Alexander Caverhill, b. 1855,(my ggranfather), Jane Elizabeth Caverhill, b.betw 1846 and 1851, Emma, b. 1850, and William II, b. 1852. All born in Canada.
My guess is that either he, his father,or both, emigrated from Scotland, but I have no further clues where to look. My hope is that someone out there is a cousin and has some information.

Does this unusual name come from the ISLE OF MAN

There are various variations on 1841 IOM listed.

I haven't had any hints that it does come from IOM, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

It's also a very common name in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
If William Kissock died in 1859 it might be hard to get details of where he was born but have you tried tracing brother David to see if you can find his birthplace or their father's?

I found a death registration for David Byron Kissock who was born 14 Oct 1854 to David Kissock and Annie Anderson. He died in Toronto on 14 Jun 1930. Unfortunately in the space where it asks for the birthplace of the father there is just a line. It does give his racial origin as "Scotch". The informant was his wife.

Could be Northern Ireland/Ulster or Scotland then.

I have located David in Toronto (York) in 1846...a wholesale & retail grocer and he is the one who married Anne Anderson and had David Byron. Can't seem to get beyond that. Thanks for your help.
