Can anyone tell me the names of local papers for Telford (especially Trench area) in 1970. I am hoping to find an obituary or death notice.

There is the Wellington Journal - 1854 - 1970 - (microfilm) at Telford Library it covered most of Telford.
There is also the Shropshire Star newspaper that runs 6 nights a week. Copies of these are held at Shrewsbury's Shropshire archives.

Your welcome glad I could help. The Archives will be closed though for improvements soon. They are closing on Monday 1 June 2009 until Wednesday 8 July 2009 they will also have new opening hours then which are:
Sundays Closed
Mondays Closed
Tuesdays Closed
Wednesdays 10.00 - 17.00
Thursdays 10.00 - 20.00 (original documents must be ordered by 17.45)
Fridays 10.00 - 17.00
Saturdays 10.00 - 16.00 (original documents must be ordered by 15.00 Friday)

Hi Aileen
Many thanks for the up to date info. I managed to get to Shrewsbury archives last week but they only have original copies up to the mid 1960's. The archivist told me that the Wellington Journal is held on microfilm at Telford Library so I emailed the library asking for a lookup but no reply as yet. Not a wasted journey to the archives as I had lots to look up in parish registers.
