mary balsom
« on: Friday 08 May 09 01:13 UTC (UK) »

would someone kindly explain what information the following would be:

Match quality: 3 out of 5    U.K., City and County Directories, 1600s-1900s
Directories & Member Lists
Name:    Mary Balsom Taylor
Publication:    year - Devonshire, England

came up on ancestry in historical records for mary balsom married to robert taylor.
having trouble finding any record of this couple, their son albert b c 1836 presumably at sea on their way to australia, he married elizabeth steel in 1861 in balmain nsw, there is a record on nsw bdm of another son james taylor b 1840, robert taylor's occupation doctor, surgeon, unable to find death entries.
any information on robert taylor and mary balsom living in england much appreciated.

thank you

If it's searching on Ancestry, I highly doubt that the information contains anything on a "Mary Balsom Taylor".  They've found a directory that somewhere contains the names "Balsom", and "Taylor".

You might well find a Robert Taylor, surgeon in a directory but you are unlikely to find Mary and definitely not with her maiden name listed.

I'd concentrate on what you have in 1840 - where were the family living when James was born? You could see if Robert shows up in the 1841 census (there are three possibilities on the NSW archives site).
Also, who was present at Albert's marriage?

http://www.rcgp.org.uk/default.aspx?page=93 - some information on tracing surgeons/doctors here.
http://www.medicalpioneers.com shows no Robert Taylor.

Hi

Have you checked for deviations in Spellings,  I have a lot of Balsum's Bolsums, Balsom, in my family and the spelling kept changing making it really hard to track them down.  On my side of the family Balsom in a females middle name represented her mother's maiden name, but you probably know that already.  would be interested to see the link  if any with your family.
