Men who joined the Indian Army
« on: Thursday 10 July 08 03:39 UTC (UK) »

kia ora
Could any body out there point me in the right direction about finding out about the men from England who joined the (British) Indian Army.  This is before 1890.   I think Sandhurst trained some officers and then obviously they went out to India.

There is a big gap in this chaps time line from the time he left school and to when he got married.  I have some written evidence - not military and would like more

Hopefully a mod see pull it out and start a new topic for you.(*)

The British Indian Army was open to all members of the Commonwealth to serve in; it was very like the Gurkhas are today - many of the officers were white (and mainly, but not exclusively from the British Isles) and the troops and some of the other Officers were from British India.

Officers were trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before leaving to joing their Regiments in British India.

Sandhurst will have records of anyone who trained there - and the National Army Museum (London) will be able to help you with more research, hopefully.
