Traditional Shetland Craft
« on: Friday 08 May 09 09:36 UTC (UK) »

Until the mid 1800s large numbers of the boats used in Shetland were imported from the Bergen area of Norway. From the mid 1800s onwards the locals started to build the boats themselves, sticking to the same design, as there was a reasonable saving on the customs duty.

Sixareen - a square sailed boat varying from about 25 - 30 feet overall with a beam of 7 - 8 feet. http://shetlopedia.com/Sixareen

Yoal - a smaller vessel than the sixareen ... around 21ft 5in overall with 5ft 5in beam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoal
