John McFarlane BLACKIE & Margaret SMITH, COMPLETED MANY THANKS
« on: Friday 08 May 09 21:06 UTC (UK) »

I am helping my girlfriend's mother (a 2nd mother to me) trying to track her great grandparents, who emigrated to New Zealand.  I've managed to track the family in NZ and the trail has led me to Midlothian.

John McFarlane Blackie, b: 1845 in Dalkeith, Midlothian married Margaret Smith, b: 1841 Of Hunterfield, Midlothian.  Their children were Dorothy Blackie, John William Blackie, Kate Blackie, Margaret Jack Blackie, Mary Blackie, Anne Blackie, Rachell Blackie and Walter Blackie.  I don't have John and Margaret's marriage date or the date of the children's births.

I am trying to find any census info for the family so I can determine when to start my search for emigration records to NZ.  Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi

I've found them on the 1871 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire* but can't find them on the 1881.

Also a submitted entry on the IGI  for their marriage at Newbattle in 1869.

Regards

Many thanks Gadget ... that's great to have the marriage date.  Re the 1871 Census Record in New Monkland - were all the children living with the family at that time (reason I ask is that it appears there are more children in NZ and I'm trying to work out which ones were born in Scotland)?

Many thanks

 Cheesy

I'm so sorry,  I should have scrolled down further.  Many thanks for this information.  I know that daughter Kate came to NZ as a child, so the family must have moved from New Monkland to ? as from cemetery records here in NZ, I'm calculating that the family emigrated shortly after the 1881 census.

Thanks again,
Helen

Sorry - I had to check the birth places - i'll see if I can see any of the others - do you have a rough date order because they may have  moved between New Monkland and NZ  Undecided

IGI has their last birth as Margaret  - 12 Sept 1873, New Monkland.

However, the IGI doesn't list the births consistently after 1875.

You can check them by going to the IGI and entering the parents names only, with British Isles  and Scotland

Sorry to butt in but just noticed thread.
1869 is not the correct date for parents marriage.

No offence Gadget but I was doing my own thing.

John and Margaret married 12th April 1867 both 23.
Parents Walter Blackie and Margaret Jack / John Smith and Jane Thomson.

Haven't had a chance to look further into the thread yet bbut hope this clarifies.

Helen, I'll send you a PM as soon as I can - my phone has been non stop tonight - very unusual!

Thanks - I'll go to the IGI now.

I wish I did have the order - your 1871 census record looks right, but I don't have a record of Jane in NZ, so she may have died before emigration (I'll be able to confirm this once I can track down the passenger list).

The only reason I believe that the family didn't emigrate until around 1883 is that Kate Blackies death record says that she was a resident of NZ for 50 years.  She died in 1933 aged 62 years, which means should would have been born around 1871 (probably after Dorothy).  I'm not sure how accurate her cemetery record was, but if she died aged 62 and was in NZ for 50 years, she would have emigrated aged around 11-12.

I'll check out the IGI now ... many thanks for your assistance.  Let me know if there's anything I can lookup for you in NZ.  Address is (*) and I have a gmail address.

Dave,

Thanks - your email just came in after I posted my last.  I appreciate this marriage date and this all ties in with the name "Jack" as it keeps repeating here in NZ.

Same applies - if I can do any lookups in NZ, please feel free to contact me.

A ken hen! but it never does any harm to have the correct background.

As for 1881, I'm having no more joy than you Gadget.

I've searched using wildcards for each of the kids.  Nothing obvious.

Sorry Helen.

SP now working again for me  Roll Eyes

Last birth for them in New Monkland seems to be  Margaret Jack in 1873

No Ann, Rachel or Mary - Walter and Catherine were 1872

A couple of Marys in Glasgow but   Undecided

They might have moved but without using a lot of credits, I can't be sure.

I ran a check for Rachel 1873-1883 for all Scotland but nothing came up. It might be worth trying to find her approx age from your NZ records.

So unless we can find them on the 1881, I'd say they left sometime after Margaret's birth in 1873 and before 1881.

With you there Gadget.
Open question..... Is Findmypast any good for looking for this one?
I don't have access but think I hear FMP being cited often as a source for passenger lists.

(Note to self - find out more about sites before quoting them as a source!)

FMP Passenger lists only start in 1890, Dave, so it's not much help.  Got Explorer membership  Smiley

I think The Ships List or some of the Oz/NZ listings on Ancestry might possibly have them.
