Youngson-Cruden
« on: Friday 08 May 09 23:06 UTC (UK) »

Hello
Looking for any information on both of the following .... John Youngson married Jessie Brown.  The only sure fact is that their son John was born July 10, 1861 in Cruden.  If anyone can elaborate I would be very grateful.  Also looking for John's siblings.

Thank You
Carol

Hi

Does it say if John Youngsons parents were married on his birth cert as I have found this on the 1871 census. The family are living at Fenchan Cruden

Janet Smith 72  (head)
Margaret Dickie 33
Janet Brown 32  (grand daughter)
John Youngson 10  (grandson)
James Brown 8  "
Alexander Nicol 1  "

Hello Carol

The IGI gives a birth 'extracted',  for a 'John Youngson or Brown' which would seem to indicate he was illegitimate.  Gives a birth date of 10 July 1860 - which is one year out from a Pedigree Resource File entry also on IGI.

Regards,  Steve .  :O)

I also note that in Cruden there is a marriage 2 years later of a John Youngson - but not to a surname of Brown.  I did a Scotland wide search for a marriage to the couple on the IGI 1860 - 70.

The only way to resolve this is to download the birth entry from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  - £6 minimum spend allows for download of 5 bmds etc - copies not transcripts.

The link below shows what you'd get on a Scottish cert.

 Hi again

It looks like Janet Brown married a John NIcol in 1869 and went on to have a load of kids with him as per the 1881 census.

John Youngson b 1861 seems to be a farm servant on the 1881 census at Catle of Auchry Monquhitter Aberdeenshire

It's a small world! Windhill is about 2 miles from me (as the crow flies!)

Wow – what a great bunch!!  Thank you all so much for your responses……….I’ve learned more here than in the last 10 yrs!!

HI Norma

Janet Smith 72  (head)
Margaret Dickie 33
Janet Brown 32  (grand daughter)
John Youngson 10  (grandson)
James Brown 8  "
Alexander Nicol 1  "

Wondering if the Janet Brown above is not actually a daughter and John’s mother, rather than a granddaughter………It would have been a way to save face.  That would fit so well!!

All I have for John Jr’s parents is the following – his marriage announcement and the IGI record - his first daughter was named Jessie Mildred Youngson.

Emma Susan Dundas 030386 012501
27, r. Dundas, b. W. Flam, d/o Hugh & Julia A. Van Every, to John
Youngson, 27, r. W. Flam, b. Aberdeeenshire, Scot, blacksmith, s/o John
& Jessie Youngson. Wit: Jeremiah Maloney, Beverly Twp & Hattie Horning,
Copetown, at res. of bride’s father, Dundas. Groom-Pres. Bride-Meth.
Rev. R.W. Woodsworth.

Hi Steve

In the 1901 census in Canada, John is listed as being born in 1861, so am wondering if the IGI is a possible transcription error. In the wedding announcement and on the census John and his wife are the same age, born in 1861

Did John and Jessie have one child together and then both go their own ways??  I found a John married to Elizabeth Sangster – would be nice to know if that is my John senior.

I am seriously thinking of giving SCP a try, because John senior or any link to his family is very scarce. He and Jessie are the ones that I would like to find out more about.

Norma
Thank you for Jessies ?second?  family – if everything fits, these are step siblings to John senior

Hi Fist –thank you –
I googled Castle of Auchry – Is it a farmhouse?? – that’s all I could find – if so – so be it………also checked out Windhill on Google earth……. – nice to see where places are………….

Thank you all so much for the help – This is fantastic!! And so kind of everyone!

Hi

Jessies children on the 1881 census would be John jrs half siblings. If you were to find Jessies marriage to John Nicol it would give her parents name and also if she stated she was a spinster or previously married. I think the first is the most probable.

hi again

just looked at this again and there s a Jessie brown born in Cruden in 1837 to a Margaret Dickie and Alexander Brown  on the IGI so the 1871 census would seem to show Janet Smith  (head) Margaret Dickie (think age should be 53 daughter) and Janet brown (32 granddaughter) and John Youngson should show Great Grandson) definately your family in my opinion.

Here they are on the 1861 census living at Teuchan cruden

Janet Dickie 62
Margaret Dickie 43
Jessie Brown 23
John Youngson 9 Mo

Hi, Castle of Auchry is a working farm,so I guess that the farmhouse you googled would be the correct one.
