Hi,

I don't know if you will be lucky, but have you tried www.picturethepast.org.uk?  It's a good site to know about!

Best wishes,

Hi Shaun,
I was a bit confused about the english heritage picture (because it said Hyson Green - which is an area quite a distance from the castle Undecided) so I had a look for something which confirmed it was the castle area - thankfully it is.
* see this photo:

Thanks for the site, gortonboy - I haven't seen these pictures before.
I have an ancestor I am researching who live at his address before he died, and his death certificate mentions Gillyflower Hill, near Jessamine Cottages, which I believe (though I may be wrong is the cottages in the foreground of my picture) - it really shows the proximity of the two places .
Thank you.

* this shows it well, too:

the KEYWORTH AND DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY...........someobody there has more photos{slides} of the cottages as attested to by this report from thier website,,,,,The following series of slides portrayed Jessamine Cottages, close to Nottingham Castle. The cottages were build on the side of a sandstone cliff which was removed to make way for a new development. The cottages looked very picturesque but, in fact, were very primitive inside with beaten earth floors. The cottages could be seen from the Castle grounds and were another victim of the headlong rush to ‘modernise’ Nottingham.

Hi gortonboy,
No, I hadn't seen that one - nice one isn't it Smiley
I'll take a look at the Keyworth and District History Site.
I was born not far from Nottingham, and lived near there until eleven years ago, so I know the area fairly well. They made some awful mistakes in the sixties, in the effort to "improve" Nottingham. The building that is there now is the People's College (totally out of keeping with other buildings near the Castle) - but then I suppose it provides a good central location for many students studying there.
I suppose although the cottages were picturesque from the outside they might have been a problem in other ways - but I wonder now if they would have a classification/protection order put on them; purely because of their age. Who knows! There are some interesting buildings on High Pavement which may still be at risk (the old Records Office) - I'll be interested to see what they decide to do with them.
Let's hope the powers that be have learnt from those mistakes - but then I suppose with current financial difficulties it will be a tough decision.
Thanks so much for all your help, gortonboy.
Take care,
Paulene Smiley
