AAhhh!! please help.. cannot read this at all.
« on: Monday 04 May 09 07:42 UTC (UK) »

Dear All,
Hopefully some lovely people out there may be able to help with a wee problem I have. For 2 years I have searched for parentage of a relative of mine. I have finally found some possible solution, however a) I cannot read the fathers name or occupation (does it say Mason?) and when you put the data in Ancestry for any possible interpretation of the spelling which looks clearly right to me ( as I know what it says - Biddiscombe) nothing comes up so I am sure it's written as something different but what?Huh Name is 8 down on right side.
Can anyone help please. Thank you

sorry ancestry won't let me save in anything but Html and rootschat doesn't want me to upload it. Ref is HO 107/1174/6 if anyone can find it. 1841 census under Mary Biddlecombe (need name above this one ) for Hindon or East Knoyle,  wiltshire. Mary was born 1776. Find what I think is her living with her as Davis family. Should read Biddiscombe not Biddlecombe but cannot read husbands name or occupation. Hopefully someone can find it for me.
Sorry couldn't be more useful at this

Or did you want to know the ancestry transcription?

That is Biddlecombe.

Definitely Biddiscombe, given name William abbreviated to Willm. yes, I agree occupation Jo. Mason ( journeyman).  Yes, Ancestry index transciption is Biddlecombe.

These of any use ?

Findmypast has it indexed correctly as Biddiscombe  Smiley

It might be worth making a correction on ancestry as that would help other researchers to find it

Kind regards

Hi Romawi

Have a look at http://www.pope-genealogy.me.uk/41174.html#bk6

This piece (1174) was transcribed in 2007/08 by a FreeCen volunteer and checked by myself. All the entries show "Biddlecombe"
I would be inclined to accept this as the correct version of spelling used on the census

The spreadsheet is the advance copy variant  uploaded onto FreeCen

The advantage of looking at this format is that you can scroll through the book to get an appreciation of its contents and also search using "Ctrl F"

Glad you added that, John, was just about to post a pic of part of the actual census image which clearly shows it!
FreeCen volunteers are doing a great job

Thank you all so much, very useful information. Guess I need to brush up my old handwriting techniques a little. Glad you thought it was Mason too. Not sure what a journey man Mason was but can figure it out. All my Biddiscombes were Masons and this was a little bit of a tenous link, so a little less now. Wanted it to read mason, and then convinced myself it wasn't. Thanks heaps once again

Hi Sarah,

Journeyman:  A tradesman who has served his trade apprenticeship and mastered his craft, not bound to serve a master, but originally hired by the day. The name derives from the French for day - jour.

For more information see http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/i-k.html#J

Marriages - all at East Knoyle.  Hindon was not licensed to conduct marriages until April 1847 so East Knoyle was the parish church for marriages for HIndon dwellers.

2 Jan 1797    William BIDDISCOMBE m Sarah NISBETT  (Wm of Hindon, transcribed from Phillimore's)
May 1832      JOhn BIDDISCOMBE m Eliza SNOOK,  (both of Hindon)
27 Apr 1812  William BIDDICOMB m Mary YETMAN   (both of Hindon, transcribed from Phillimore's)
4 Feb 1819    Henry BIDDISCOMB m Elizabeth WHELLER  (both of Hindon)

Cannot see any possibles for 1837 - 1908

You may already have this  Smiley

I don't have access to any births or deaths - hope this helps!
