Hi Althea,

The best history of this unit is Richard STOWERS' excellent Forest Rangers, published by the author in 1996. pb. 294pages. It includes biographical details of soldiers serving in the two companies, engagements, plus weapons uniforms and equipment.

The note for 'Clement A. CORNES' says only: "Original company; 11 August-10 November 1863. Private. Made land claim."

Do you want me to have a look for any information about him at Archives Wellington next week?

Regards, riley

Hi althea,

I would warn you not to get your hopes up. The fact that Stowers' entry was so brief might be that he did not find any further information.

You may have already checked this source, but there are a couple of references to Clement Cornes in the newspapers online between 1883 and 1887:

Yes thanks Beluga
The joys of researching a one only name (except for his sonwho was C A junr)
you can be sure of articles that they are the right person.
Clement from articles at the paper was highly respected goldminer/manager..who several times had a fortune and lost a fortune..par for the course for most goldminers.
The gold fever was in their veins and they kept sinking their $$ into more ventures and as gold became harder to get, the $$ran out.

Hi Riley
I am so pleased you pointed out the book
Very interesting, being able to read the battles as they happened
Appears Clement being in the original troop of 65 made that land claim but would never have been accepted, given that he didn't re-enlist in one of the reformed troops.
What a pity it didn't have the detailed info that some have, all the enlistment details.
Anyway fingers crossed you may find more.

Hi althea,

Sorry, couldn't find a record of him in the NZ War Medals card index. Just in case I also looked in the card index for the Colonial Defence Force - Auckland Militia but nothing there either.

Thanks for looking Riley
Interesting his brother Alfred Riuchard served in different troops, he got a war medal after some dalay...odd they didn't serve together
Anyway maybe the fuss over the land, drop in pay etc..he didn't want the medal.
Who knows, I see last night on the Documentary ? or history channel there are some new ones showing on Von Tempsky..so that should make interesting watching and insight into the times.
Thanks
