Jane Warcup census problems
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 18:49 UTC (UK) »

I have Jane Warcup in Pete's family tree as being Bapt on 5 July 1823 Lockton to Francis Warcup and Hannah (nee Metcalf) Jane married Thomas Nellis in 1841 in Ebberston children Margaret George  John Sarah  Mary William Jane Thomas  Hannah Betsy  Isabella  Joseph

Here's where the problem starts

1871 Thomas Nellis Age: 54   born: Thornton,  Thomas Nellis 54  Jane Nellis 49  Isabel Nellis 10  Joseph Nellis 7  Warkup Nellis 2 RG10/ 4843/4; Pg 1

and

1871  Hannah Warcup Age: 81   Mother  born: Lockton, Jane Weal 46  Elizabeth Weal 14  Mary Weal 10  Hannah Warcup 81  Jane Bullock 26  RG10/4843/ 66 Pg 9
Details for Jane [Jane Warcup]   46  Mother's Name: Hannah  born: Lockton,

If I have the wrong Jane Warcup marrying Thomas any ideas who it should be? My info came from several people who are descendants of the Nellis side of Pete's family so I assumed that the info was correct until coming across a duplicate Jane for 1871, the only other possibilty could be if one of Hannah's son's married a Jane and she is mother in law not mother.

In 1861 RG9; Piece: 3644; Folio: 68; Page: 13

Adam and Ann Weal are living in Church Street Thornton Dale with daughters Elizabeth 4 yrs (transcribed as 4 months) and Mary 6 months plus Frances 6 yrs

... perhaps it's just wrongly written

although in 1881 and 1891 she is Jane Weal  Huh

here is your Jane in 1841

1841 HO107; Piece 1260; Book: 8;   Folio: 8; Page: 8; Line: 6;

Ebberston

Thomas Nellis 19 yrs
Jane Warcup 19 yrs
both servants- amongst several others
Thomas Hayes farmer

she was transcribed as 'Waicup' but it was altered in January

Family Search has 3 possible baptisms:
1822- Beeford - parents John and Hannah
1822  Seamer near Scarborough parents Joseph and Margaret
and the one you refer to.

As Jane Nellis gives East Ayton/Ayton a couple of times on census as pob - the Seamer one looks best but the marriage certificate will confirm her father.
Additionally she does call her first child Margaret.

There are Family Trees on Ancestry with the information you have which would now seem to be wrong.
There is a tree here: http://www.acalvert.com/OtherWarcups/gp178.htm with other information re Warcup/Nellis.

Hi Heywood

Many many thanks.  It's been an eye opener finally trying to put Pete's side of the family tree into word to print out, it's only been through looking for all the missing census returns that I've started to find all these problems, I'll have a look through my contacts and find anyone else with the same mistakes and let them know.

It's strange and probably totally unconnected but I have noticed that there isn't an 1881 census for Thomas and Jane Nellis, as 1881 is a popular and free census you would expect to see them on it, I know Thomas died 1889 but there's no 1891 for Jane either then Jane surfaces again in 1901 and I see your reference to East Ayton on it RG13/4556/11 Pg 3.

Hi Heywood

Just been viewing the link, many many thanks for it so much info and amazingly William Warcup is my Jane's uncle which explains why I got the families mixed up, the marriage certificate pins Thomas and Jane to Joseph being Jane's father and he was born the year after William which probably explains the similarities between Joseph and Margaret and William and Hannah's families (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it Grin)

Will check out Hellis tomorrow, usually in the land of nod by now but so much info to view, I can't thank you enough you're a star for all the help you've given me today.  I'll set about putting my family tree in order on ancestry and GR as soon as poss, and let other Nellis/Warcup descendants that I'm in contact with know of the correct info too.

Have to go to bed dogs to walk in 7 hours, they don't understand Sunday lie ins unfortunately.
