1841/1851 Census help please
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 20:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm hoping someone could please help me complete my search on one of my ancestors please.

I'm trying to find an entry for 1841 and 1851 for Mary Ann MacFarquhar. She was born in 1835 I believe in Evanton.

Her father was William MacFarquhar who was a Master Tailor and her mother was Jane Whyte. I'm not sure of any siblings.

I've managed to get all her post-marriage censuses, but I can't find anything from before she was married.

Any help would be very, very greatfully received.

Thanks
Julz xx

Have you checked this one as a possible

1841 census
Mary MACFARQUHAR, Female, aged 5, born STORNOWAY,
GROS Reference 088/00 005/00 007

Edit : Scratch this one - it looks as if she is the daughter of Alexander and Christian

Searching Scotlands People for
Mary* M?cfar*r brings up only the one entry for the 1841 census - the previously entered one.

searching the 1851 census brings up only 2 entries for the same search criteria and both are much younger than the lady you are searching for although like the previous entry both are from Ross and Cromarty

Mary MACFARQUHAR age 4, born KNOCKBAIN    Gros ref:   073/00 003/00 022
Mary MACFARQUHAR age 2, born STORNOWAY gros ref:   088/00 007/00 017

Thanks Falkryn. At least I know I've not missed something really obvious.

I'll try tracking down her mother's death cert and check if perhaps there was another marriage or anything that would change her name, perhaps she just reverted to that on her Marriage.

Thanks again

Thank you Capricorn and Ghostwhisperer. That certainly looks like my family.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me to look up Jane under Whyte/White, or that William may not have been a tailor yet.

Thanks
