Dear all
I have tried in vain to obtain a birth certificate for my great grandfather, James Price.
He was born around 1843 in Llangattock (possibly registered in Brecknock district rather than Crickhowell) - his parents were James Price (Carpenter) and Martha James. She in turn was the daughter of Lewis James (stonemason) and Ann Rumsey.
I am able to trace James through the years in the various census and been foiled a few times as there have been discrepancies in his age.
Through a book belonging to him in our family, I am 99% certain his birth was 1843.
If it assists in finding the information he had three siblings
William born in Llangattock
Ann also born in Llangattock
Lewis born in Aberdare
James Price senior died when Lewis was a very young child and Martha married again to Henry Lewis.
I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed - the research is of great interest to my 93 years young aunt who was unaware of who her Price ancestors were and thought her father William James Price had only his step family.

Given that the place of birth in 1851 for all the children except Lewis is Crickhowell, and the family were in Llangattock in 1841 where registrations would be Crickhowell, have you eliminated these?

If you're ordering from the GRO, you can use the father's name as a check, so you wouldn't pay the full amount for a wrong one. Or you could try the local office, bearing in mind these references mean nothing to them. Address for Crickhowell

It is possible that his birth wasn't registered. At this time, the onus of registration was on the registrar, not the parents. That didn't change until the 1870s.
If you can't find the cert for James, would the one for Lewis do? Only 2 choices by the looks of it

I've tried all three references and the gro office states they are unable to issue a cert as the father's name is not James, the mother is not Martha and the place of birth was not Llangattock.
I'll try the powys office next.

I got in touch with Powys records office and they found James Price birth certificate - April 1842 and I've now obtained a copy. Thanks again for your help.
I've added completed to the title line.
