Hi John

Thanks for the info, it does tie in quite well, i don't have the death certificate, i might have to get it and see.  Is Ampthill Road in Beds. then?  Geography not a strong point, but it's getting better.

Regards

Posty,  That is Ampthill Registration District  that covers Marston/ Milbrook, rather than Road......

.... & yes there are many Ampthill Roads in Bedfordshire - depends where you are  Cheesy

Thanks John

I e-mailed bedfordshire archives and got a reply about Moreteyne and millbrook, it is a private house now, but William T Smith was the landlord from 1897 until 1904 he later died this same year, still in the moreteyne.  Stiil don't know if it is my William Smith, but they are sending me copies of burial entry and the page from the petty session license register, for a small fee.  More digging still to do i think, not sure why they would have been in Malta for so many years...what wars were on, barking up the wrong tree.....AND mmmm blonde moment (ampthill rd)  thanks John...have you stopped laughing yet  Cheesy

interestingly if you go to the Beds Archives website & search their catalogue - and put 'Morteyne Arms' in subject search - there are several results...

http://blars.adlibsoft.com/beginner/indSbjt.html

... including in 1892, reference to a transfer from John Bowles to George Morrison Smith. Inventory and valuation...

... but I cannot find any link from him to the William T Smith in residence in 1901

Ok thanks again for your help, will try when i have a bit more time, maybe over the weekend. I'm intrigued now.

by the way, you asked me, some messages ago, if  William Smith, the publican, also had a son named William, who went off to war. He did have a son called William, but not sure if he went off to war as he was down as living at the Millbrook Hotel at the time that George (his brother, my G Grandad) had signed up for the army, this i know doesn't mean that he never went off to war, but it may be another avenue to explore at a later date.
