Hello Posty, This article says the pub opposite the station was 'The Morteyne Arms' . The station is on the Bedford - Bletchley line & it is situated midway between (on the road that links) Marston Moretaine & Milbrook.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millbrook_(Bedfordshire)_railway_station
from the 1901 census at 'The Morteyne Arms' in Marston Moretaine is
William S Smith, Head age 50 born Nottinghamshire ; Publican Mary F Smith, wife, age 40 born Moulton, Northants Francis Smith, son, age 16 ; born London ; general labourer Isaac Smith, son age 14 ; born Malta; publican's son Harry Smith, son age 11 born Malta Arthur Smith, son age 7 born Malta Frederic Smith, son age 5 born Malta Percy Smith, son, age 2 born Marston, Beds
Is this your family ?
regards John

Hi John
Thanks for your reply, but my William's middle name was Thomas, on the records that i have it states Millbrook Station Hotel, but underneath a name is crossed out, maybe it says Morteyne Arms. Hope the photo comes out ok for you to take a look.
Hve tried getting old photo's of the building but can't seem to find any, but thanks again for the info.

hello Posty, nope, your photo did not display - I got a box that said 'invalid type;
Have you tracked your William Smith though the census ? If not & you would like that info then please let us know his year & place of birth, if you know it.
I take it that William Smith, the publican at Millbrook/Marston is your gt-gt-grandfather. Also is his son, your gt-grandad, the one who went off to WW1, also named William.

Hi John
I don't know where William was born or what year, yes he was my G G Grandfather, his son George John was my G Grandfather, it says on his army records that he was born in Dublin in 1881 his wife was called Ethel (Goodison) I didn't mention George John as he was in the army, just the rest of his family named on the army records as living at the said Hotel. Will keep trying with the photo, but keeps saying file too big.
Thanks

William's middle initial could be one of many letters, with T being one of them.
I think the scrubbed out name could easily be Moreteyne Arms, Marston (not Manston) Beds

Thanks David
I have George John Smiths wedding certificate and it states his fathers full name as being William Thomas, think i'll start to look for old photo's of the Morteyne Arms, see if that throws something back at me.
Thanks again

Hi John
The date on that particular record is between 1899 and 1904, George Johns year of birth was 1881, in 1901 he was in South Africa, (26.09,99-12.02.04) he married Ethel Goodison in 1906 and says his residence was 4Durham terrace, hodgson st, Hull, but says his father is deceased and his profession was a publican in 1911 they're at 5 wawne terrace. Hodgson st. Hull. No links with Malta as far as i know.
Too much of a coincidence though don't you think, maybe they just stayed there?? I'd never make a detective
Regards
