Trying to help my friend connect
« on: Monday 21 February 05 17:02 UTC (UK) »

My Friend has a Pendium X is it/? that she bought 12 months ago. She moved it last year in the summer while decorating and hasnt been able to connect to the net since. I have spent hours with it. Every time i try to connect it rings then cuts off saying not connected. And shows the unplugged plug on the toolbar. Her I.P say this isnt there problem and must be her computer. The thing is everything is plugged in and in the right place. I have checked all the wire gone through the intruction book. But still cant fathom it out what else can i try,I think she has also locked herself out of her computer in parts with microsoft. Roll Eyes

Celia,

Have you tried reinstalling the ISP software?  It is possible that her tcp/ip settings have changed and these are causing the disconnect a reinstal would fix that.  Also has she got a firewall?  If so check that she hasn't inadvertently set it to lock her ISP out, thats another common problem.  If it is dialing to her ISP does it get to the password check stage or is it disconnecting before that?  Is she on dial up or BB?  If the latter as she moved too far from the socket? 10m is the furthest away she should be.  Although that is unlikely

Hi Rob no i havent tried reinstalling it as it's not my computer and i havent had to do that befor. I think i would be scared of doing that. Yes she bought a firewall a few weeks ago not sure if she 's put it in though. She lost the connection last year though so it's not that. No it doesnt get as far as the password it just keeps saying unpluged. She's on Dial up and socket distance is o.k. Her computer is very different to my old reliable  W.98 so i will get her to do whatever you suggest while i supervise Grin The strange thing is someone came to have a look at it a few weeks ago and he got on the net. Next day she tried but couldnt.

As someone else has more recently succeeded in connecting we can rule out soe of the options (although not many)

1) check modem card is secure in socket ... try connecting

2) check plugs are ok and secure ..... if possible try using a cable that you know works in another machine and then re try original cable. .... try connecting

3) If using Internet explorer right click on the "E" on the desktop and from properties select connection and ensure settings here correspond to what the ISP has provided (number etc).... its possible that its automatically using a stored password and this is wrong and thus throwing her out..... try connecting.

4 ... if any of these work seriously get your friend to consider a new ISP the attitude of her current provider gives the  appearance of being very poor.

You could try setting up a test connection via freeola, you do not need to sign up with them or anything.  That should show if the problem is with the PC or the ISP.

There are instructions to set up a connection here.  You do not need to install any software and its a normal 0845 (1p a minute) connection.
