I'm trying to clean my knackered old 'puter up. I've downloaded Spybot and AVG to clean up any viruses and spyware. I seem to have been very lucky I haven't found either.
However, it [pc] is glitchy. The mouse flies around sometimes or very rarely it will just close down and restart.
The current problem seems to be that I can't run Scandisk or Defrag they just get caught in a loop and keep restarting.
What can it be? I'm on Windows 98 and I have no idea about the other characteristics. I've deleted all temp & internet files as they were massive I'm only using half the hard disk space.
Don't know if anything else is needed to diagnose - it's a unhappy chappy that's for sure
Thanks, Pam

Hi Pam,
Switch off virus checker and anything else that is running, that is not needed - by looking in msconfig - otherwise the virus checker will keep seeing you have updated something and start the process all over again!!
You should only have a couple of things running - that are necessary to run windows etc
Then it should work
Cheers
Keith

Hi Pam,
Well done!!
You must have a slow machine - which means it might be best not to leave it quite so long next time!!
Just make sure you don't fill your drive to capacity - if that is old as well.
Cheers Keith

It's a glitchy thing - I got it 2nd hand off a guy in work. I use 10gig of 25gig capacity and that'll be reduced when I take all my ex's stuff off it.
In general it is a very quick machine "except" for system maintenance. It has been too long since I defrag'd because it went through a phase of over heating, I think the previous owner has over clocked it somehow? Anyway now I'm the only user it seems fine.
Thanks again, Pam
