William REEVES born 1819, Hanmer Parish
« on: Sunday 10 May 09 19:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi - my great x 2 grandfather William Reeves was born in Hanmer Parish in 1819 to Richard Reeves and possibly Mary Maddock[s].
Richard Reeves was the name that William gave to the minister marrying him and his second wife, Emma Bate born 1832, in Wolverhampton in 1853.  William also told the minister that his father was 'deceased'.
William was a Miner at the time of his marriage and continued as such thereafter until 1891.

I have only been able to find William on the 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses (he died in 1891); no matter what I do, how I reconstruct his names, I cannot find him on either the 1851 or 1841 censuses.  Now I am aware that, with those who were unable to write and thus unable to fill in their own census forms, when the enumerator came around and completed the forms if someone were not in the household at the appointed time they were NOT counted.  And William, as a Miner, might well have been down or at the pit at the crucial time (wherever that pit was).
My main question though is less about the frustration with the censuses than it is about a young man or lad becoming a miner if mining were not in his family - would it have been possible?  I ask because the specific area in which William was born and raised was agricultural rather than mining or mining and agriculture mixed, so it seems unlikely that Richard would also have been a miner.  Perhaps William's motehr Mary (who appears to have been from Bettisfield and was living in Iscoyd when she married) had the mining connections?
Could anyone advise me on where to look?  Thanks a lot, fredandora. Huh Cheesy

Grin - Thanks a million Shirl - I hadn't found that one!  A case of getting to the end of one's tether trying out the different spelling combos that the index compilers might have used...

Next step getting the marriage cert.... My most grateful thanks again; you've given my day a filip!
