Kearns/Keirans/Kerns/Keeran
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 20:30 UTC (UK) »

My Grandfathers family were registered in Graigue, (now known as Graigue-cullen)Laois (Queens County/Leix) between 1860 and 1873, 5 children had 4 different spellings. Talk about making research difficult. James b1873 served in the British Army in India (1890s) and the Boer War from where he wrote a really informative letter detailing the war on Aug 30th 1900. I know he married a Scottish girl and lived in Glasgow in the early 1900s.   Tim was born in 1871, married Jane Howard. They had 2 sons James Oct 1894 and Timothy Dec 1895. Family legend says he emigrated to Australia. Bessie worked in Shrule Castle until her marriage to the butler (Moore/Moran?) and they emigrated to America.   They also had two known children but all contact was lost with all three family members.  Any of this ring any bells in anyones research?  The spelling variations are a pain but maybe some of the other information will jog some memory.

Kearns/Cairns Laois to Scotland
« Reply #3 on: Thursday 27 March 08 20:29 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,
This is a long shot. I’m looking for relatives/decendants of James Cairns aka Timothy Kearns who was born December 1895 in Sleaty, Queens County Ireland.  His parents were Timothy Kearns  (Born Sleaty Queens Co Ireland 1871) and Jane Howard Stewart (born Makerry  Co Tyrone c1873). They are in the 1901 census at 1 Cartburn St. East Greenock, Renfrewshire along with another son John born in 1899 in Co Tyrone.   James Cairns married Annie Livingstone on 26/9/1915 in St John Church, Portugal Street, Glasgow.  Her parents are listed as Alexander and Mary (nee McNally) Livingstone.   Witnesses were Edward Murdoch and Maggie Hughes. They both gave their address as 50 Commerce Street. Glasgow.  James death cert is registered 8/6/1955 at Royal Infirmary, Portland Street Glasgow.  The death was registered by his son T. Cairns and the given address was 580 Old Shettleston Road, Glasgow.
Why would they have changed the spelling to Cairns, although I know the Scottish pronunciation of Kearns and Cairns is similar?  What about his brother John, did he also change his name?      I am researching from Ireland so accessing information is not always easy.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated
