Hello Gill

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

Do you have a subscription to a family history research site like ancestry or findmypast?

You can find the family in the census from that, from 1841-1901, then find births deaths and marriages on the same kind of site, or on free sites like freebmd, freecen, and then freereg for parish records before 1837

The 1911 census is pay-to-view but would give details of length of marriage, how many children survived etc  www.1911census.co.uk/

If you have a look at the Beginners boards on Rootschat you'll find lots of help and advice  www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,47.0.html

Here's 1901 census to start you off:

1901 RG13 Piece 1567 Folio 11 Page 13
41 Vicarage Road, West Ham, Essex
BIDDLE
Charles      head mar 46  Milkman  b.Whitbourne, Herts
Francis       wife   mar 49                b. Lower Beeding, Essex
Isabel Jane  dau        16 Millinery Saleswoman   b. Streatham Essex edit West Ham
Maria Katharine  dau  14                 b. Streatham, Essex edit West Ham

If you would like any earlier census look-ups, just ask

Kind regards
Barbara

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your help. I have not subscribed to a pay site, each time I consider it i find the information I want else where. However I think this might be the way to get information on this family, particulalry Charles' parents.

Is there a census record for when Charles was young that might give me his parents names? Now I know he was born in Whitbourne this should narrow it down.

Thanks again

quite frequently see Herefordshire confused with Hertfordshire !  1881 - Hereford, 1891 ditto, 1901 - Herts !

The girls were born West Ham btw ....

I only looked more closely as I couldnt think where Streatham in Essex might be - the clerk ran the words together virtually, so it did read Streatham at a quick glance  Wink

Totally my fault, was in a rush to finish before going out, always a bad idea.  Misread it, didn't have time to check gazetteer as I usually do, no excuse, thanks for picking it up
