Walstow help, Caunton & Newark
« on: Monday 11 May 09 08:07 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

Im trying to find out about the Walstow(e) family from Nottingham.  I know that Mary Trickett married Thomas Walstowe 1845, Southwell Dist, Notts.  I have found them on 1851,1861 & 1871 census living in Caunton. Children
William 1846,  Elizabeth 1849,  Ann 1851,  Thomas 1853,  Samuel 1854,  George 1856,  John 1859,  Alfred 1861,  Thewlis 1863,  Herbert 1866,  Mary 1868 and Martha 1846.

I am trying to find out who the children married & any baptisms of their children.  I know the family moved to Wakefield at some time after 1871 census.

Any help would be brilliant,
Thank you
Jan

I wish I could see them in 1871! George is shown as married in 1891, but Martha isn't there with him (RG12/3806 111 19)

Hi Jan,

Not sure exactly how much of this you have...

This might be a birth for Martha:

Births Dec 1844
Trickitt, Martha, Newark, vol. 15: 543

For that death of Martha in 1887, it was the wife of George Kipling. The website www.sheffieldindexers.com has the following family of Kiplings, all found in the same grave (including Martha & George):

Bunney, William (Striker, age 66).
     Died at 48 Ashby Rd; Buried on May 10, 1918 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, Albert (child, age 13mo).
     Died at 180 Eyre St; Buried on March 5, 1898 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, Frances (wife of Henry, age 39).
     Died at 89 Hodgson St; Buried on May 7, 1907 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, George (Cab Driver, age 73).
     Died at 1 Carr Lane; Buried on December 31, 1913 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, Henry (Retired, age 74).
     Died at 89 Hodgson St; Buried on January 15, 1941 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, Martha (Married, age 46).
     Died at 192 Eyre St; Buried on November 29, 1887 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Kipling, Martha (Child, age 17mo).
     Died at 179 Eyre St; Buried on September 21, 1889 in Consecrated ground;
     Grave Number 12952, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

Sheffield Indexers is a great site, there might be other relatives of yours on there if they stayed near Sheffield.

I’ve been looking for George Kipling’s birth, I think he was born in 1840 in Laxton, Notts. – not Caxton as it is transcribed on the 1881 census. I remembered that there were a large number of Kiplings in Laxton. On the IGI there is a baptism 16 Aug 1840 in Laxton that would fit, the son of George & Mary KIPLIN. The GRO index shows George Kipling, Sep qtr. 1840, Southwell, vol. 15: 623. Laxton is not very far from Caunton. George ‘Kiplin’ is still living in Laxton with his father in 1851 and by 1861 he’s a servant at Walesby (spelled Kippling).

You probably have this but George & Martha’s eldest son was born Sep qtr. 1866 in Sheffield dist. There is also an entry for Anne Lizzy Kipling in Sep qtr. 1869 in Sheffield – but I’m not sure if that’s the right one.

I have also spend ages looking through the 1871 census for them, with no luck, sorry! I was just thinking that maybe Martha started using a different name (perhaps beginning with A? as she used it as a middle initial in 1881). I have a relative whose name was Patience but she went by Martha her whole life even though it was completely unofficial. It made tracking her rather difficult, quite like this. Maybe your Martha did something similar.

Hope some of this is a little help.
